Welcoming Rev. Brent Huckaby, New Oxford College Chaplain
Rev. Brent Huckaby has been named College Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life at Oxford College of Emory University, following several months of serving in an interim role.“Oxford is an incredibly unique environment,” Huckaby said. “It’s a small campus of only 1,000 first- and second-year students, all of whom continue to Emory Atlanta at the end of their time here. ... The caring and welcoming community, beautiful campus, and diversity of the student body make Oxford unlike any other university I know.” Serving in campus ministry was not a path he had anticipated, but Huckaby says he now feels a deep sense of call to this work. As the fall semester nears mid-term, Rev. Huckaby is focused on getting to know the students, faculty, and staff even better and on helping make spiritual wellness a meaningful part of campus culture. Rev. Huckaby previously served as an Associate Minister at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, and as a Religious Life Affiliate in the Emory University Chaplaincy. Welcome Rev. Brent! Learn more here

Emory First: National First-Generation College Celebration Week.
November 5-14, 2025
First-Generation College Celebration (FGCC) Week is celebrated annually on and around November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (“HEA”) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students’ education and made key investments in colleges and universities. Many of the HEA’s programs promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students. All students are welcome to join us in the community.

This year's celebration at Emory runs from November 5-14 and is themed around "Trailblazing Together," featuring a variety of programs and activities. Hosted by Emory First and in partnership with campus organizations and offices, the celebration offers a range of activities.

Come celebrate with us and join the fun. Follow us on Instagram at @emoryfirst for more updates and see the full list of events below or on the Emory First website.

TIJS Rothschild Lecture & Seminar
Rothschild Lecture and Seminar: “The Material of Race: Caribbean Jews, Clothing, and Manhood in the Age of Emancipation and Liberal Revolution”
Friday, November 7, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Callaway N204 (lunch served) or via Zoom
The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies presents Laura Arnold Liebman of Princeton University in a seminar exploring how the oversized attention given to clothing by Jewish men in the Dutch and British Caribbean reflected their concerns about winning acceptance in these colonial societies, where dress was considered a prime marker of civic virtue, race, and proximity to power. Especially during the 1820s and 1830s, when Caribbean Jews were engaged in the process of petitioning for civil rights, the relationship between manhood and clothing became a prime battleground on which the war over Jewish equality was waged.

The Tam Institute for Jewish Studies: Rethinking Jews and Race: Eric Zemmour and Far-Right Jewish Identity in France
Frday, November 14, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Zoom Seminar
This seminar delves into the writings of Eric Zemmour, a far-right French polemicist and presidential candidate of Algerian Jewish origin who reframes himself as a native white Frenchman. It examines his use of xenophobic and anti-Muslim rhetoric, rooted in the "great replacement theory," and his defense of a perceived Judeo-Christian French identity. Drawing upon Baldwin and Fanon, the paper argues that Zemmour's ideology reveals a deeply embedded anti-Semitism behind his anti-Muslim rhetoric, highlighting the enduring postcolonial entanglements of race, religion, and fascism in the French Republic.
This session is based on a pre-circulated paper that should be read in advance. To receive the text and the Zoom link, please register here. For more information, email brent.buckley@emory.edu.

- Join honest, energizing conversations about purpose, values, and leadership.
- Recharge in a reflective, retreat-style setting — surrounded by other motivated juniors and seniors.
- Leave with tools (and a community) to make the rest of college — and life after — more intentional, meaningful, and yours.
- Have an amazing time! (We take play very seriously…)
Whether you’re preparing for graduation, considering your next move, or simply looking to reconnect with your “why,” Emory Advance offers the space — and community — to do it.
