Integrating Oral Health In The Primary Care Setting
Fluoride varnish application is an effective intervention in early childhood to prevent dental caries formation. Fluoride varnish can be applied readily in the primary care setting, and it offers an effective way to reach patients who may not have routine access to dental providers. Fluoride varnish should be applied twice a year to children up to age 6. This service is reimbursed by insurance plans. Changes in the billing process may have raised questions about who is eligible to provide fluoride varnish application in the office. For children on Medicaid managed care plans and most commercial plans, fluoride varnish application can be delegated to staff members who have received appropriate training. The Partners For Kids quality improvement (QI) coaching program has a project focused on helping practices incorporate this into their office workflow. Contact the Partners For Kids QI Coaching program at PFKQICoaching@childrensdayton.org if you are interested or have questions.

VaxCare: An Easier Way to Provide Long-acting Reversible Contraceptives
While many contraceptive options are available, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are considered first-line due to greater than 99% efficacy, favorable safety profile, tolerability and extended duration of action (three to 10 years). One challenge for ensuring timely administration of LARCs in the office is the high, up-front cost of stocking implants and IUDs. In response, VaxCare has applied the model they have historically used for stocking vaccines to improve in-office availability of LARCs. VaxCare provides LARC inventory to practices on consignment, automates ordering and management and bills the patient’s insurance (medical benefit) on the back end. As a result, partnering with VaxCare can help ensure same-day administration of LARCs to your patients. Most Medicaid managed care plans are currently contracted with VaxCare. For more information about VaxCare click here or reach out to PFKProRelations@childrensdayton.org for more information.

Did You Know?
Primary care practices that serve children enrolled in Medicaid may be eligible to receive payments for demonstrating high quality of care through participation in Ohio’s Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) Kids program. Many primary care practices are already doing the work needed to qualify for these payments through their Partners For Kids partnership. Whether your practice is already enrolled or interested in enrolling, we want to support you. We can help with enrollment or help implement best practices to improve health outcomes for the kids you serve.
Learn more about the CPC Kids program. If you are interested in connecting with a Partners For Kids team member to talk further, contact PFKProRelations@childrensdayton.org.
