Turkey and Syria Earthquakes: Community Gathering for Support and Response

The Emory community is grieving with those impacted by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that have taken and harmed so many lives. All are welcome to gather in community for a time of sharing remarks, prayers, and resources for support and action. Refreshments will follow. Mahashivratri Temple Visit 2023
Saturday, February 18, 8:30-11:45 p.m.
For the upcoming festival of Mahashivratri ("The great night of Shiva"), Emory's Hindu Chaplaincy and the Hindu Students Association are planning a visit to the Hindu Temple of Atlanta on February 18 to witness their worship and have darshan of Bhagavan Shiva. If you are interested, please fill out this RSVP form by February 14.
Program details:
- 8:30-8:45 pm: Gather outside Rita Ann Rollins Building at 1531 Dickey Drive
- 8:45 pm: Depart campus by bus for Hindu Temple of Atlanta
- 9:30 pm: Shiva worship, dance performances, music, light prasad (blessed food)
- 11:00 pm - Depart from Temple
- 11:45 pm - Arrive back on campus (Rita Ann Rollins Building)

Ecumenical Ash Wednesday Service

Weekday Morning Prayer in Lent

This year, the Christian Chaplain and Christian Religious Life Affiliates are collaborating to offer weekday morning prayers during the season of Lent. From February 23 to April 6 (excluding spring break), Monday-Friday, you are invited to join us in prayer from 9:30-9:45 am in Rustin Chapel (the small side chapel in the Cannon Chapel sanctuary). Please see below for the weekly schedule of prayer leaders.
Our Lenten prayer practice will prepare us for our Holy Week services, which you can find listed in this semester’s preaching schedule too.

Dean's Interfaith Speaker Series Recap
On Friday, January 27, OSRL hosted the first installment of our new Interfaith Speaker Series, as Dr. Celene Ibrahim came to campus to speak to Candler and OSRL on "Women and Gender in the Qur'an" and "Monotheism in Islam and Other Faiths." This first installment of this series meant to encouarge interfaith learning and conversation was cosponsored with MSA, GMSC, and MESAS, and we shared a delicious halal lunch, great community, and thoughtful questions and conversation.

February Is Islamic Awareness Month: Muslim Call to Prayer

Fridays in February, 1:45 p.m., Call to Prayer: Cox Hall; Friday Prayer: Cannon Chapel
The Emory Muslim Students Association and the Graduate Muslim Student Council celebrate the month of February as Islamic Awareness Month, and by longstanding tradition, the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) is played on Fridays after the 1:45 p.m. chimes from the Cox Hall carillon. This call to prayer announces the time for Jumu'ah prayers, the weekly communal prayer held on Fridays at 1:55 p.m. in Cannon Chapel.
The call to prayer is a general statement of Islamic belief and a summons to prayer, traditionally recited from mosque minarets five times a day.

TONIGHT: Buddhist Guided Meditation
Thursday, February 9, 6:00 p.m., Cannon Chapel Sanctuary
Join us for Buddhist meditation this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. You may also come early starting at 5 pm for the new weekly tea ceremony and the usual snacks while we prepare for the meditation session.
Note that while the meditation will be taking place upstairs in the Sanctuary, the 5:00 p.m. tea and snacks will remain in Room 106. They will be there for your enjoyment before and after the meditation. For questions, please contact Venerable Priya Sraman.
This meditation will be led by Bhante Deepankara. He is a Sri Lankan monk from Georgia Buddhist Vihara in Stonecrest, Georgia.

The Many Lives of Andrew Young: A Conversation with Andrew Young and Ernie Suggs

Emory Libraries is proud to host Ambassador Andrew Young and Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Ernie Suggs to celebrate the recent publication of the book “The Many Lives of Andrew Young,” written by Suggs. Young, a civil rights icon who turns 91 in March, was a two-term mayor of Atlanta, US ambassador to the United Nations, and served in the US House of Representatives.
Young will share stories from his time at the forefront of the civil rights movement. Suggs has been a reporter at the AJC since 1997, currently covering race and culture. He is also the publisher of the paper’s weekly Black-oriented newsletter, Unapologetically ATL.
The conversation, part of Emory's observance of Black History Month, will be followed by a Q-and-A session. Books will be available for sale at the event, and a book signing will follow the conversation. Learn more and RSVP here.

Volunteer Emory: Alternative Spring Breaks Participant Applications
Passionate about volunteering in communities in the American Southeast? Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips offer unique opportunities for service and learning outside the Emory campus.
Volunteer Emory organizes a series of local and regional service trips designed to nurture meaningful student development through projects that offer community engagement, exposure to social justice issues and cultural events, and a unique hands-on education. The mission of each trip is to allow students to collaborate with non-profits and community change agents through service projects and cultural experiences.
Participant applications for Volunteer Emory's Alternative Spring Breaks are open until 11:59 pm EST on February 12. If you're looking to spend part of your spring break learning about social justice topics and collaborating with community organizations, this opportunity is for you. In the northern tradition, it commemorates the parinirvana of the Buddha. In cultures of Southeast Asia, the buddha's parinirvana is remembered during Wesak. The dates and names of Buddhist celebrations vary significantly among cultures and communities.

Tradition: Hinduism
A feast dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. The night before the feast fasting is observed, texts are recited, songs are sung, and stories told in honor of this God whose cosmic dance creates, preserves, destroys, and recreates the world.
