In the days following the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, an estimated 540 million tons of ash drifted up to 2,200 square miles, eventually settling over seven states. Receiving the full force of the eruption’s blast, Spirit Lake was decimated, becoming a toxic mix of ash, debris, and volcanic gases. Today, Spirit Lake is recovering, and Alex Barnes ’20 gathered bacteria from the lake’s famous floating logs to learn how.
