Dominic Palumbo, Web Developer
Began May 2023
What do you like most about your role as web developer at the SOMC?
I really love the autonomy I have within my job at work, along with a work/life balance I didn't have in my previous role. For the most part when I’m working, I’m able to make the final call and decision about what goes live on our website, which is really cool to know that my work has a direct impact on the perception of the School of Medicine Columbia. I still have a long, long way to go, but I’m super proud of the work I’ve already done. In terms of my work/life balance, I came from the world of college athletics where the idea of vacation days and free time was non-existent. Since arriving here, I’ve really had a chance to further grow my relationship with my wife, Rachel. We bought our first house, and I really believe I’ve become a much more well-rounded human being since arriving in Columbia this summer.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to solve?
My biggest challenge has been simply creating a game plan for how I’m going to tackle working through and making edits to our website. The website was in a place when I got here that made it difficult to take what was given to me, process it and then figure out how to take it on step-by-step. It’s really been a challenge to take things one day at a time, but I think I’m doing a good job. I recently overhauled our giving pages, and I’m super proud of this project, because it was the first set of pages that I was able to edit, finish and publish from start to finish since arriving in May.
What goals do you hope you accomplish? What future projects excite you in effectively communicating to the public about the SOMC?
Continuing my day-to-day progress of trying to improve our website so that hopefully in the next year or two, it is in a place that we can all be proud of as we eventually move into the new building in the BullStreet District in the coming years.
