MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
7th Grade Adventures In Literature
Sarah Stark's 7th grade English classes spent an entire month studying Rudolfo Anaya's award-winning novel, Bless Me, Ultima. In addition to writing about and discussing important characters, universal themes, and writing techniques found in the novel, students responded to Anaya's powerful use of symbols: the church, the wind, the garden, the river, the owl, the golden carp, the mermaid, and the brujas (healers). Working in groups or individually, students created 3-D art pieces that transformed the classroom into a study of these symbols, resulting in a new perspective on Anaya's work hanging from the walls and the ceiling, taking over the blank spaces between the tables and even covering a spare desk. Bravo, 7th grade!
8th Grade On Ice!

Ice skating has been added to the 8th grade PE winter curriculum. Sessions fall on Wednesdays during regular PE class time, and each student will have the opportunity to go ice skating three times this year. Please note, students will need a sack lunch on their skating day to eat in the bus. Also, please, no nuts or nut products. Skaters will need to bring layers of clothing, especially gloves, and are welcome to bring their own skates. If you have questions, please contact Rennae Ross at rross@sfprep.org.

WHAT PATH WILL YOU CHOOSE?
Dear Prep Community,

We are in the process of reaching out to each of you to ask for your support of our annual fundsome of you have been reached already, some of you will be soon, and many others have already donatedthank you!

Tuition does not cover the cost of a Prep education, and this year we need to raise $560,000 through our annual fund for our students and their education. Every dollar you donate to Santa Fe Prep is tax-deductible and helps ensure our students' education is personal, exceptional, and everlasting.

This year we are focusing on four priorities for our annual fund: 1. Tuition Assistance, 2. Spotlight on the Arts, 3. Innovations in Teaching and Learning, and 4. Breakthrough Santa Fe

If you have not had a chance to donate, then please click here to read more about each priority, and choose a path of support that means the most to you. Call or email Director of Advancement Kézha Hatier-Riess with any questions—505.795.7526 or khatier-riess@sfprep.org

Thank you, from the entire Prep community!
VISUAL ARTS FEATURE
In Alex Peña's Observational Drawing class this semester, students drew from the skeleton in preparation for drawing from the figure. Above are a sampling of class pics. Alex shares, "Their drawings are amazing! They are so talented and learn so quickly. I'm very proud of what they are doing." We all look forward to seeing what else has been going on at the Meem at Arts Night this Thursay, December 8 at 5:00pm
PARENTS' ASSOCIATION
The Parents' Association would like to announce a new partnership with the Santa Fe Public Schools' Adelante Program. This program provides advocacy, tutoring, and material aid to children, teens, and their families experiencing homelessness. Wednesday evenings throughout the school year, Adelante hosts these families at Sweeney Elementary, where participants share a hot meal. After dinner, while parents attend a parent education class, their children enjoy an art class or receive tutoring support. Each family leaves with a bag of fresh groceries, free books, clothing and other needed supplies. Adelante currently estimates upwards of 1,700 students in Santa Fe Public Schools are experiencing homelessness or insufficient housing.

The Parents' Association, with the help of the Senior Class, organized a food and supply drive last month in order to support urgent needs expressed to us from the counselors in charge of the program. Thank you to all who so generously contributed!

Prep will also be hosting four Wednesday dinners in February and March. (Note: this is instead of our usual Interfaith Shelter Week.) Each grade will be assigned an evening to prepare and serve dinner and to help with that night's craft project. More details about this after Winter Break.

ATHLETIC NEWS

Fall Sports Wrap

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer Team for bringing home another blue trophy. The Blue Griffins beat Bosque 1-0 in the state finals, capturing their second title in 3 years. In the midst of extreme weather, the Blue Griffins rallied to impressive victories over teams which they had previously lost to, beating Socorro 1-0 in the semifinals and Bosque in the Championships.

The Girls Soccer Team capped off a fantastic season with a near-upset of district rival St. Mike's in the quarterfinals of the State Championships.

Girls Volleyball surged through the early rounds of the district tournament with convincing wins over Monte del Sol and McCurdy. Unfortunately, they lost to Dulce in the District Championship match and narrowly missed receiving an at-large bid to the State Tournament.

The Cross Country Teams followed the momentum out of their district races with solid performances at the State Meet in Rio Rancho. The Boys, behind lead runner Tristan Olrick ' 17, finished 6th out of a very strong class. The Girls were very close to a podium finish, running just 5 points behind the 3rd place Pecos Panthers. The team rallied behind Chelsea Griscom '21 with a solid team effort; things look bright for this young group moving forward.
Winter Sports Updates

The Swim & Dive Team began their season with a meet up in Taos over the weekend. Congrats to the Boys 200 Medley and Freestyle Relays for placing 3rd overall. Individual highlights include: Joseph Murray '18 finished 12th in the 200 freestyle; Annika Birk '17 placed 4th in the 50 freestyle; Cameron Mathis '18 won his heat in the 50 freestyle, placing 16th overall, and swam a near-perfect race in the breaststroke, placing 3rd overall; Reed Kellam '19 swam a solid 50 freestyle, placing 4th, followed by a gutsy 100 butterfly, placing 6th; Cody Babcock '20 swam his best technical 50 freestyle, improving his personal best by 2 seconds. Cody followed that up with a solid 100 backstroke, placing 6th. We are excited by the teams results and look forward to seeing the team compete in the Demon Invite at the GCCC this weekend.

The Basketball Teams are in full swing with a handful of games under their belts. The Girls, with new Varsity Head Coach Brent Cooper, and a talented but inexperienced group of young players, look to capture their first win with a home game this Tuesday, December 7 at 6:30pm against East Mountain. The Boys capped off the weekend with a 7th place finish in the Braves Invitational with a win over Native American Community Academy. There are two games left prior to the Winter break, against East Mountain and Pecos. Go Blue Griffins!

Grandparents' Day Was Phenomenal!

Prep’s annual Grandparents’ Day took place on Tuesday, November 22 and was a huge success with more grandparents attending then we’ve had in years! We had grandparents who flew in for the day just to have the opportunity to share a special moment alone with their grandchild, and others who live near and were also thrilled to learn more about their grandchild's education.
Click here for a glimpse of the day and here to read the heartwarming words of our Grandparents' Day Speaker Seth Montgomery '12 .
Congratulations to three fine musicians who will participate in the All-State Music Festivals! Beckett Maestes '17 has been selected to participate in the top All-State Jazz Band at NMSU January 20-22; Vineet Naranyan '19 will play first violin in the All-State Concert Orchestra January 5-7 at UNM; and Urian Vasquez '21 (not pictured) will be Prep's first-ever participant (!) in the NM Youth All-State Choir at the Las Cruces Convention Center January 26-28.
Thank you to local social activist Cecile Lipworth, who visited history classes last month and presented a viewing of the award-winning documentary "Through the eye of the Needle". This extraordinary short film illuminates the life of Polish Holocaust survivor Esther Nisenthal Krinitz, who at the age of 50, began telling her story through stitched art. Following the video, Cecil facilitated a discussion about her belief in the power of art to transcend barriers of language and culture that can divide communities.
A big Griffin Cheer to Jun-Hong Chen '19 who starred in Santa Fe Skating Club's show, "Hooray For Hollywood", this past weekend at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center!
Congratulations to Prep English teacher and local author Robert Wilder on the wild success of his new novel NICKEL. Rob has been making the rounds these past few months, attending readings and book signings around the country. Just last month, Amy Sanders O'Rourke '99 and husband Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke hosted a book party in their historic El Paso home, where Wilder read and answered questions from an audience that included local educators and UTEP professors. Rob spent this past weekend at a book signing at the Wesport Library in Westport, Conneticut, where grew up.
For you Santa Fe locals, you can mingle with the author, hear him read and have your book signed this Thursday, December 8, 5-7pm at Bittersweet Designs located at 667 Canyon Road.
