Leading expert in Responsible AI, Kay Firth-Butterfield, joins Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society as visiting scholar

Drawing upon the University’s strategic focus to produce meaningful contributions in data and computational science, the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society has appointed Kay Firth-Butterfield, distinguished expert in Responsible AI, as a visiting scholar.
Firth-Butterfield is collaborating with several Notre Dame faculty including Nitesh Chawla, founding director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and Olaf Wiest, the Grace-Rupley Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, to consider responsible policies for AI deployment across several disciplines.

Natalie Meyers, professor of the practice for the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, is the co-chair for the Research Data Alliance Artificial Intelligence and Data Visitation working group.

At a recent RDA workshop, “The State of AI: Opportunities and challenges for the RDA global community,” the workgroup released three outputs that contribute to building the ethical, legal, social, and technical frameworks for the open sharing and re-use of data in the framework of Open Science. The reviewed outputs are now publicly available here.
