Students Turn Storytelling into Connection |
Faculty and staff volunteers at Sam Houston State University brought personal stories to life through Kats Shelf, an interactive event designed for live conversations that foster empathy and dialogue around health experiences and social challenges.
Recently held and in conjunction with the Newton Gresham Library, the project was the culmination of yearlong ACE (academic community engagement) courses in collaboration between the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Public Health.

ACE BBQ Culture Class Success |
With weeks of study, deliberate and careful planning, students in the ACE BBQ Culture course prepared for judges what they felt was a real Texas BBQ offering on April 15th.
After serving the judges, they plated 150 trays, more than that in sample cups, and by the end, they were making make-shift tinfoil containers to share their food with students and staff so that they too could sample it. This really took their ‘classroom learning’ to the next level, and I dare say they will long remember that day when they cooked in front of the Coliseum for their community!

TRP Book Named Finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award | |
The Book of Wounded Sparrows by Octavio Quintanilla, published by TRP: The University Press of SHSU, has been named a Finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, one of the most prestigious honors in American poetry.
Distinct from many literary prizes, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award is specifically intended to recognize and support poets at mid‑career, offering both national recognition and the resources to continue developing ambitious new work. Since its establishment, the award has built a reputation for identifying poets whose work goes on to have a lasting impact on the field.
This finalist designation underscores the literary excellence of Quintanilla’s collection and represents a notable national achievement for TRP: The University Press of SHSU.
