Jonathan Perez, a fourth year student at the Huckabee College of Architecture, was recognized at the Texas Tech Parents Association's Annual Faculty & Student Awards Breakfast. Jonathan was named the recipient of the 2022-23 TTPA Student Academic Leadership Award.

HCOA Knights of Architecture - PECHA KUCHA 2023 |

Knights of Architecture, a social and service student organization at the Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA), held its end-of-semester event "PECHA KUCHA" on April 1st at 5&J Gallery in Downtown Lubbock after a three-year hiatus post-covid! The event consisted of presentations from faculty members Pratana Klieopatinon, Marshall Drennan, Victoria McReynolds, Isabel Manahl, Lingyi Qiu, and Lauren Phillips. Their presentation topics touched on color theory, what makes architecture, landscapes, what defines an architect, the process of designing, and the characteristics of architecture in real life.
PECHA KUCHA exposes students to a unique curriculum, increases student involvement, and helps connect students to faculty. Knights of Architecture is a student-run service organization that provides programs and events to further enrich the education of HCOA students, enhancing their abilities and design knowledge through extracurricular educational opportunities. The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) held their 111th Annual Meeting in St. Louis from March 30th to April 1st. The conference included very strong representation by Huckabee College of Architecture faculty.
Associate Professors Ersela Kripa and Stephen Mueller presented on their recently awarded 2023 Course Development Prize. The presentation was titled: “Over-exposed: Ultraviole(N)t Shade in the Borderland”. Assistant Professor Zahra Safaverdi also presented on her recent Honorable Mention in the ACSA 2023 New Faculty Teaching Award. Associate Professor Chris Taylor presented his paper titled “Field Support Vehicle: Model for Embodied Architecture Pedagogy”. Assistant Professor Nate Imai presented a paper titled “Digital Assemblies”, and also participated in a session of the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) with a presentation on his article: “Seeking Redress: A History of Little Tokyo’s San Pedro Firm Building,” which is forthcoming in JAE Issue, 77.1 Reparations. Assistant Professor David Turturo also presented a paper titled: “Wilderness Urbanisms as a Collaborative Design Pedagogy”. Assistant Professor Julie Zook, who also attended the conference, served as a member of the review committee for the conference. This committee was responsible for overseeing the conference’s peer-review process.
Finally, the conference included meetings of the Editorial Boards of ACSA’s two scholarly journals: The Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) and Technology, Architecture + Design (TAD). Two HCoA faculty currently serve on these editorial boards. Associate Professor Ersela Kripa serves in the JAE editorial board and, along with Associate Professor Stephen Mueller, is currently the issue editor for JAE Issue 77:2, Deserts. Associate Professor Hazem Rashed-Ali serves on the editorial board of TAD and is currently the issue editor for TAD Issue 8:1, “Climate”.
This strong participation is the highest representation from Texas Tech's Huckabee College of Architecture at the ACSA Annual Meetings in the last seven years.

Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan recently received the “Phenomenal Women of Texas Tech” award which celebrates women at Texas Tech “who defy statistics [and] who are gradually chipping away at the long road to achieving gender equality, whether purposefully or not.”

Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan gave a talk on her newly published manuscript “TEHRAN: From Sacred to Radical” at the Sharmin and Mijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for and Iran and Persian Gulf Studies at Princeton University on March 29, 2023. The discussion delved into the effects of political change, power struggles, and autocratic modernity on the city's architecture and the built environment.
