Reflections from Wellness Day

April 12, 2021, marked the first annual Wellness Day at Duke. The goal of Wellness Day was to provide the Duke community with opportunities to prioritize well-being by reflecting on wellness choices made throughout the year and to take a moment to rest and be re-energized. From spiritual contemplation and coloring books to Zumba and live jazz ensembles, there was something for everyone. The sun was shining with no clouds in the sky and students were able to take a moment to sit and appreciate the time with friends. In total, the in-person events provided by staff across the institution served 597 unique students throughout the day. Virtual events provided additional opportunities for students to engage in wellness practice.

Student Spotlight

A recent Duke Magazine feature follows four students from the class of 2024—Bentley Choi, Matthew O’Stricker, Colin Kaeo, and Bri Cellini—as they recount their first semesters at Duke. Though their time has been anything but ordinary, these students share stories of friendship, ambition, and growth as they find their place in Duke’s centennial class. Read more about their experiences as first-year students navigating university in a global pandemic.

All students will be required to present proof of vaccination for the Fall 2021 semester. Documented medical or religious exemptions will be accommodated. Read the announcement and FAQs

Upcoming Events

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There are several events to support students and survivors as Duke works towards our goal of eliminating sexual violence on campus and beyond. This month Duke is highlighting several student-focused offerings. These include a virtual art gallery and an evening with Duke alumna Mary Adkins, whose new book Privileged explores intersectionality and gender violence. Amazing student organizations like SHAPE are also providing a robust offering of programs throughout the month.
Families can learn more about Duke’s Covid Amnesty Policy and the new federal Title IX policies.

ArtsFest Occurring this Week

Throughout the week, students have been enjoying ArtsFest 2021 presented by duARTS, a week-long celebration of the arts around campus. This year, ArtsFest features both online and in-person events, including panels, webinars, and pop-ups at the Nasher, the Arts Annex, and Bryan Center Plaza. A full list of opportunities can be found on the duARTS webpage.

Vaccine Distribution for Students

As of April 13, 2021, out of an abundance of caution, the FDA issued a pause on vaccinating with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, in order to allow examination of clotting as a potential adverse effect.
For students who were signed up to receive the J&J vaccine through Duke on or after April 13, Duke Health is offering vaccination with the Moderna vaccine. More information can be found on the Keep Learning Health Guidance page.

In Case You Missed It

Duke Gardens Phase 1 Reopening

Sarah P. Duke Gardens began their phase 1 reopening on April 1. During this phase, Duke students, faculty, and staff can register for timed tickets available at a limited capacity each week. Visitors must present their Duke photo ID and completed daily symptom monitoring app as well as their timed ticket upon arrival. This period of limited access in phase 1 will better inform the Garden’s staff of any challenges that may arise as they develop their plans to gradually expand visitation in phase 2.

End-of-Semester Exit Testing

To coordinate end-of-semester testing, Duke surveyed all students about their plans for leaving campus. Exit testing will be provided for all students primarily through surveillance testing. Students with specific testing needs were also invited to sign-up for a clinical PCR test. More information about the exit survey and testing is on the Keep Learning FAQ.

Class of 2025 Regular Decisions Released

Duke released offers of admission to this year’s Early Decision applicants on Monday, April 5. Duke received 49,555 applications for undergraduate admissions for the 2021-2022 academic year, an almost 25% increase compared to the 39,717 undergraduate applications last year. Handshake Coming this Summer

Supporting a robust recruiting environment for Duke students and the world’s top employers is a priority for the Career Center at Duke. We are excited to announce a much-anticipated transition from our current services platform to Handshake. Handshake is currently utilized by over 17 million students and alumni, 900 universities, and 400,000 employers and will allow Duke students to have greater access to internship and job opportunities, multi-school recruiting events, and employer recruiting activities.
The Handshake system was chosen for its ability to utilize data from networks and machine learning to provide a personalized experience for students and alumni to engage with employers. Beginning in early June, students and alumni will be able to engage with the Career Center through the Handshake system by scheduling advising appointments; registering for upcoming career fairs, panels, and networking events; researching career-related information; and sending student peer-to-peer messaging.
A few of the many ways we facilitate students connecting with employers using the Handshake platform are to apply for jobs; register for on-campus and virtual student engagement events (formerly called information sessions), office hours/coffee chats, and interviews; and access multi-school employer events and a diverse set of global companies. We look forward to supporting the expanded connection between Duke students, alumni, and employers.
