After over three years of anticipation, the NYU Shanghai New Bund campus has finally been unveiled for the 2023 spring semester. The campus is located at 567 West Yangsi Road with the unique design of four interlinked buildings surrounding a spacious courtyard. "It is truly thrilling to finally be able to move into our new, permanent home." Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman said.

Established in 2022, and led by Professor of Global Health Brian Hall, NYU Shanghai Center for Global Health Equity works to reduce health disparities by improving the health of diverse populations through research. Hall shared with us about the Center’s growth and focus, and the faculty team’s ongoing projects. In this first edition of Research.com, top psychology scientists are ranked based on data collected from Microsoft Academic Graph on December 6, 2021. Position in the ranking is based on a scientist's D-index (Discipline H-index), which only includes papers and citation values for an examined discipline.

• Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Money, taught by Associate Professor of Practice in Economics Ilaf Elard, and Natural Language Processing, taught by Professor of Practice in Computer Science Wilson Tam, have been recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as two of the "2022 First-Class Undergraduate Courses of Shanghai Higher Education Institutions."
Professor Elard’s course focuses on blockchain as an interdisciplinary scientific innovation combining foundational concepts from finance, economics, and computer science, while Professor Tam’s course introduces students to various natural language processing techniques covering statistical and deep learning approaches and shows how these techniques have real-world applications.

In a recent study, NYU Shanghai Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jinzi Mac Huang and Professor of Physics and Mathematics Jun Zhang propose a new approach to controlling thermal convection by adding an additional, horizontal heat flux. The study has been published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, a leading international journal in the field. "The purpose of this study is to explore whether there’s a way to realize the control function of transistors in a fluid system," Huang said.

The Physics Institute co-sponsored one of Asia’s top quantum information conferences, the 22th Asian Quantum Information Science Conference (AQIS 2022), held on December 17 and 18. The conference provided a platform for scholars to share the research progress in quantum information processing, communication and cryptography, an interdisciplinary field bridging quantum physics, computer science, mathematics, and information technologies.
"The talks given at the conference were all at an extremely high level, and the posters were among the best I have ever seen," said Professor Tim Byrnes, associate director of NYU-ECNU Institute of Physics at NYU Shanghai, who co-organized the conference as the Co-Chair of Program Committee.

In June 2020, due to the pandemic, New York City launched its outdoor dining initiative, which drove a 12-fold increase in the dining scene. Researchers from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service recently published a report comparing NYC’s older, pre-pandemic Sidewalk Café outdoor dining program with its replacement, Open Restaurants. It highlights how Open Restaurants has led to new outdoor dining opportunities outside Manhattan, in communities that had no prior outside dining options. Communities of color doubled their share of outdoor dining establishments, while low-income communities nearly doubled theirs.

Shanghai Observer reported that more than a hundred Chinese students from NYU Shanghai’s undergraduate graduates went to study at top 50 universities in the USNEWS world university ranking. The report also highlighted the employment fields of Chinese graduates who have entered the workplace, among which the financial industry has the highest proportion at 39%.

"A real innovator must have both broadness and depth of knowledge," Lehman writes, recounting many stories of scientists and experts.
