New study identifies weather patterns that precede wildfires in the Southwest during monsoon season
To protect communities in arid landscapes from devastating wildfires, preparation is key. New findings by DRI researchers may aid in the prevention of large fires by helping meteorologists and fire managers in the Southwestern U.S. to forecast periods of likely wildfire activity.

Meet Erick Bandala, Ph.D., assistant research professor of environmental science
Erick Bandala, Ph.D., is an assistant research professor of environmental science at DRI's Las Vegas campus. Erick specializes in research related to water quality and water treatment, including the development of new technologies using nanomaterials to remove contaminants like antibiotics from our waterways.

Interested in learning more about what climate and weather conditions we might expect in the Great Basin this winter?

Check out the Great Basin Climate Update, presented by Dan McEvoy, Ph.D., regional climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center (WRCC) and assistant research professor at DRI. This talk was the first of several presentations at the Great Basin Climate Forum on December 6th, an annual event that brings together resource managers, scientists, and interested community members for discussions about the climate and weather issues affecting our region.

At the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in Washington DC last month, nearly 25,000 scientists from around the world gathered to share their research, meet with colleagues, and contemplate "what science stands for." In the Exhibit Hall, attendees sketched and wrote their ideas about what science stands for on the whiteboard pictured above.
Over fifty faculty and students from DRI shared research at the meeting.
