Duo Wins 3rd Place in Art of Teaming

Beta Alpha Psi Competitions team represented by Romita Sekar (MSF ‘22) and Bailey Vetter (B.S. Accounting ‘21)  won third place in the Deloitte Best Practices Competition for the Art of Teaming at the BAP Annual Meeting in Orlando FL. Bailey and Romita’s initiative was centered around promoting careers in Data Analytics to Community College students through free, accessible online resources and an in-person hands-on workshop. They have worked very hard over the past academic year to see the effects of their work and we are so proud of them!

How Diversity Promotes Accounting & Auditing Quality

Dr. Joel Owens (Assistant Professor of Accounting) and Dr. Dan Rogers (Associate Professor of Finance) presented "Practicing Futurology in Accounting & Finance" at the Financial Executives International (FEI) - Portland Chapter Academic Night in April 2022.
This summer, Dr. Owens also presented "How Diversity Promotes Accounting & Auditing Quality" at the Oregon Society of CPAs' Annual Accounting & Auditing Conference. Both presentations focus on how accounting professionals can improve the quality of their professional judgments.

Rewards and Fear of Being Labeled as Racist: A Tax Evasion Whistleblowing Study

A new study from Associate Professor of Accounting Cass Hausserman examines one possible reason individuals are reluctant to report cases of known tax fraud.
Tax evasion, and lost government revenues due to tax evasion, is not a new problem, but one that researchers and policymakers are constantly grappling with. Tax whistleblowing is one such tool that can reduce evasion, both through actual recovered tax dollars and the fear of being caught.  However, tax whistleblowing is an underutilized tool.

In Memoriam - Shirley Dunn (Business Administration, ’75)

This spring, Portland State said goodbye to an alumna, philanthropist, and giant among Rose City’s financial institutions. Shirley Dunn passed away on April 18, 2022 at the age of 73. After earning her degree, Dunn was hired at Arthur Anderson, the internationally lauded accounting firm and member of the “Big Eight.” Dunn was exceptionally talented and worked relentlessly, eventually sinking her teeth into crisis and turnaround management at Hamstreet & Associates, where she served as Principal Accountant and remained until her retirement over three decades later.

New Faculty Spotlight

  • Mary Marshall joined the Accounting faculty this Fall as an Assistant Professor and will be teaching tax classes.  Mary worked at Grant Thornton and the City of Derby, Kansas before earning her PhD from the University of South Carolina.  Prior to coming to PSU, Mary taught for 4 years at Louisiana Tech University.  Please join us in welcoming this passionate and innovative educator!

From childhood, Adrianna “Adry” Solis (B.S. ‘22) knew that she wanted to do something in business. After graduating from high school in Mexico, Adry began her sixteen-year educational journey studying English then accounting at Portland Communication College, before transferring to Portland State University’s (PSU) accounting program.
