Updated OSPI Guidance On Student Withdraws & Truancy
|
Attendance and truancy in public schools are regulated in Washington state statute (Chapter 28A.225 RCW(link is external)) and the Washington administrative code (Chapter 392-401 WAC(link is external)). School districts must report absences and truancy data to OSPI through the Comprehensive Education Data And Research System (CEDARS).
If you're looking for ways to support strong attendance in your district/buildings, make sure to reference Attendance Works District & K-12 Planning Calendars below.
Additionally, last spring OSPI provided new guidance on withdrawing students and truancy. School and district leaders are encouraged to watch OSPI's webinar introducing this new guidance on withdrawing students, captured in March 2023. You're also encouraged to sign-up to attend OSPI's upcoming webinar on truancy, scheduled for next Tuesday, September 12th from 1:00-2:30 p.m. to familiarize yourself with these important changes to guidance and regulations.

OSSI Outreach For Schools Identified For Tier 2 & Tier 3 Supports
|
Reminder for all school/district leaders who are currently identified for Tier 3 Plus, Tier 3 and Tier 2 Supports....
One aspect of being included in OSSI's realm of support is an expectation to attend the twice-a-year event titled 'Outreach.' An Outreach is an additional venue for OSPI to provide professional learning, engage in critical two-way dialogue with districts and schools identified for Tier 3 Plus, Tier 3, and Tier 2 supports, communicate key technical assistance (e.g., requirements, submission dates, data releases, etc.), and answer questions.
In years past, Outreach was a single day event delivered via Zoom. For 2023-2024, ESD 105 is transitioning back to an in-person Outreach. With 60 schools identified within our region, we have decided to provide specific offerings based on school types, in order to more effectively deliver specific information, spotlight support opportunities, and to facilitate discussions and dialogue between schools providing service to students in the same grade bands.
We are asking that school principals who have been identified for Tier 2 and 3 supports bring a small team consisting of 2-3 individuals from their building for this event. Click on the links below to register your teams for the Outreach offered for your school type.
Outreach segments will be influenced by information we're asking you to provide via a Google Form. Our overarching goal for this year is listening to you and structuring support based on your needs, aspirations, and requests. This Google Form is our first step towards that goal. I hope you will consider investing 5 - 10 minutes to provide us with your thoughts. This link will open the Google Form 'Pre-Outreach Survey for Building Principals.'

Encourage Emerging Teacher Leaders to Join WA Fellows Network!
|
The Fellows Network is a group of instructional leaders convened by the Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Association of
Educational Service Districts (AESD) to support district and community implementation of state learning standards in Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), Science, and Early Learning Guidelines.
Building principals are encouraged to invite teachers to join the Fellows Network where they are invited to step into the role of becoming influential teacher leaders. This journey goes beyond their own personal growth—it also helps shape your school improvement plan and enhancing student learning by nurturing a culture of ongoing progress.

Implementation for the revised Student Growth Goal Rubrics will be required during the 2024-2025 school year. During the 2023-2024 school year school districts will be given a "year of preparation" to plan and prepare for this implementation.
Join us for an overview of the revised Student Growth Goals resources. We will share videos that provide an overview of changes, vignettes that illustrate the kind of instruction supported by these new growth goals, as well as other additional tools and resources.
This is a great opportunity to work with other administrators throughout our region to discuss implementation plans and procedures.
