We're Off and Running!

The 2021-2022 school year begins with new faces, new excitement, and new programs
When Josh Abeyta ’22 sounded the traditional three chimes of the Elrington Bell on August 25, our Santa Fe Prep community enthusiastically launched into another year full of promise, with opportunities for learning and discovery waiting around every corner. We’re also well poised to rise to any challenges that come our way, as we face them in these evolving times together. We're looking forward to sharing this journey with you.

SFP Monthly News, this new iteration of our regular monthly digital newsletter, will contain a roundup of news and information pertinent to students, parents, and Prep faculty and staff. Look for it to arrive in your inboxes during the second week of each month.

Santa Fe Prep Alumni: You are receiving this inaugural issue of SFP Monthly News, but we will be transitioning to a special SFP Alumni News format with information tailored especially for you, delivered each October and April. Please email kosborne@sfprep.org if you'd like to continue receiving the SFP Monthly News as well.

Challenge Opens the Door to Opportunity

In this excerpt from his opening remarks to students, Head of School Aaron Schubach shares his optimism for the year ahead.
Last year, and the spring before it, were challenging. There's no denying it, and the Delta variant is serious and something that we all wish was long behind us. Let’s keep our feet on the ground and be strong.

Yes, we have been challenged and we have some choices about how we view those challenges, which might be critical to our future success. This summer I had the pleasure of meeting and listening to a brilliant thinker: Dr. Dashun Wang from Northwestern Kellogg School of Business. Dr. Wang is the founder of the Center for Science of Science & Innovation. CSSI is a multidisciplinary community for thought leaders in such fields as computational social science, network science, artificial intelligence, and complex systems. Yes, you heard me right, his center is named the Center for Science of Science & Innovation. Recently, he published an article entitled Hot Streaks in Artistic, Cultural, and Scientific Careers.

Dr. Wang studied what happens to people right before they have a big success or series of successes that he calls a "hot streak." And he found that successes do tend to come in what he calls "bursts of high-impact works occurring in sequence." Before the Math Department calls me out, though, please note that hot streaks in gambling and shooting a basketball are largely myths. But as Dr. Wang proves, hot streaks in careers aren't. And the optimistic thing is that they can happen early, middle, and late in somebody's career.

International Shakespeare Company Santa Fe at Prep

Shakespeare Comes to Prep

SFP forges a unique partnership with ISC Santa Fe
Through September 12, the International Shakespeare Center Santa Fe will be performing two of Shakespeare’s most potent political thrillers in Prep's Upper School Quad, with eighth-grade English teacher Breshaun Joyner in the ensemble. Prep's selection as a venue for these performances is part of an ongoing collaboration the company has created with Prep faculty, staff, and administrators in recent years.

ISC's stagings of Julius Caesar and Coriolanus are set in contemporary times, using non-traditional gender casting, and examining the conflict between personal motivation and political ideology. Tickets are still available for the remaining shows.

First a BT Student, Now a Teacher

Oscar Loya inspires, impresses, and engages students with his signature style and joy of learning
This summer, Oscar Loya was known to Breakthrough students as “the professor.” It’s unclear exactly how this nickname came about—that is, whether it was because of his intellectually rigorous elective: “Spatial Anthropology of Santa Fe,” or because of his tendency to recommend and loan books to anyone in his immediate vicinity. In any event, the nickname stuck for this Breakthrough alum, Davis Scholar, and first-time Teaching Fellow during Breakthrough’s 2021 Summer program.
Oscar joined Breakthrough as a student in 2013, when he was immediately recognized as someone who would tackle any academic challenge with joy and zest. With a special interest in international relations, Oscar sought out the opportunity to apply to the United World College (UWC) when he was a junior in high school. To Oscar’s surprise and delight, he was admitted with a full scholarship. To his mother’s relief, Oscar was assigned to the UWC USA Campus in Montezuma, New Mexico—meaning he could come home for holidays without having to board an international flight.
