Join us in welcoming your new dean of students, Dr. Laura Smith. She has more than 25 years of higher education experience, 22 of which were spent in student affairs. She started her career as an SMU admissions counselor, transitioning to an academic advisor at El Centro College before working at UNT Dallas as acting director of student life and coordinator of student development and services. Most recently, she served as associate dean of students for the University of Texas at Dallas. An alumna of UNT’s graduate school, Dr. Smith earned her doctorate and master’s here.

Mean Green Machine & Boomer the Cannon
   TRADITIONS OF SPIRIT
Since 1926, the Talons have embodied UNT’s traditions by creating and continuing an atmosphere of school spirit. As a student organization, they strive to uphold the old traditions and foster new ones. Speaking of traditions, did you know that in 1974 a UNT alumnus donated a 1931 Ford Model A Tudor sedan? The Mean Green Machine is also known as “school spirit on wheels” and is still fully functional. You can find it making appearances at UNT home football games and other campus events.
Another fully functional UNT artifact is Boomer the Cannon. Since 1970, this Mexican-American War replica has been fired during Mean Green home football games and other special campus events. If you haven’t already, be sure to follow UNT on Instagram and check out the Traditions highlight for a closeup look at these traditions and more!
