This month on social media, we are celebrating Black History Month by observing the dynamic contributions that African Americans have made (and continue to make) on the future of STEM!  Read more in this newsletter to learn about African American innovators that are joining us as speakers.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we'd like to introduce you to key African American STEM innovators who as Nifty Fifty speakers will be engaging students about their work and careers in STEM during school visits throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area, and on April 28th will serve as presenters at the X-STEM Symposium, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, at the D.C. Convention Center.

2017 X-STEM Speakers

This rising marine biologist and science communicator has transformed her childhood passion for the sea into exciting outreach endeavors that inspire kids and adults alike about the wonders of the ocean. Also, don´t miss her dynamic new STEM educational TV series, Xploration Nature Knows Best, which aired last fall on FOX Networks! Full Season 1 Episodes can now be viewed on Hulu.
He founded the youth-run environmental organization called Greening Forward as a website at age 12. Now discover how this University of Georgia student has transformed the organization into a dynamic global network of young environmental changemakers who are impacting a wide range of issues -- from water conservation to waste recycling in their communities.

2017 Nifty Fifty Speakers

The achievements of this trailblazing aerospace engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Center include being the first African-American female there to earn a Ph.D. in Engineering and spearheading the design of multi-million dollar satellites. Learn of her mission to inspire other minorities in STEM!

Growing up in his native country of Nigeria, this University of Maryland geoscientist excelled at using the computer to solve daunting problems in math and physics. Get ready for hands-on excitement as he demonstrates how his high-tech computer models are today studying seismic activity deep beneath the Earth’s surface!
