Dogwatch for Don Sineti: Friday, June 2
| |
Don Sineti, beloved Williams-Mystic chantey skills instructor and Mystic Seaport Chanteyman, passed away earlier this year. Please consider joining Williams-Mystic and Mystic Seaport friends on Friday, June 2, as we celebrate Don's life and legacy.
If you are not able to attend, but still want to share a story or memory, please email short remembrances to Amanda Severin F01. They will be read at the Dogwatch, time permitting, and will be shared with Don's family.
In addition, Mystic Seaport staff are collecting donations to place a memorial stone in the Mystic Seaport memorial garden for chanteyman and long-time chantey skills instructor Don Sineti. If you would like to donate, you can mail a check to:
Maria Petrillo Interpretation, Mystic Seaport 75 Greenmanville Ave Mystic, CT 06355
Please make checks payable to: Mystic Seaport Museum with ‘Memorial Garden’ in the memo line.

Over the last academic year, we have had the privilege of welcoming Rónadh Cox, Edward Brust Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Williams College, as Williams-Mystic’s Professor of Oceanographic Processes.
Rónadh has been a part of the WM community for nearly three decades as a colleague at Williams, recruiter of geosciences majors to the program, and faculty teaching guest on the Gulf Coast field seminar. Yet, this was the first time she experienced a full Williams-Mystic semester, and she seamlessly integrated as part of the faculty team, participating in maritime skills in addition to teaching and traveling on field seminars. Her passionate enthusiasm, skilled scholarship and fieldwork, humor, and deep care for students made us admire her even more.
As Director Tom Van Winkle says, “Rónadh has been a strong advocate for Williams-Mystic for decades. She was key in establishing the Maritime Studies Concentration at Williams and has faithfully collaborated with our team on field seminars and on-site visits with her oceanography classes. When this opportunity to have her work for the program arose, we all knew it was the right thing to do. There's no better way to deepen your understanding and love for a program that you've known about from a distance, than becoming a part of the team. Rónadh is and will remain an essential member of the Williams-Mystic family."
As the year comes to an end and we must say “sea you later,” we offer our deep appreciation to Rónadh for her time and dedication this year, and always.

Alumni Expertise Supports Student Policy Research
| |
We would like to extend our gratitude to the 21 Williams-Mystic alumni and friends who advised S23 on their Marine Policy research. Alumni responded to the call for action in March's eGam and their help made students' projects all the richer. Whether by providing interviews and resources, or by connecting students with experts in their field, support and connection to WM alumni in critical policy fields means the world to current students.

Even More Newsworthy Alums!

Check out these Williams-Mystic alumni making waves and gaining national recognition for their work in the maritime world:

Linsey Haram F08
"To find that many coastal species on a relatively small sample size was shocking,"
Linsey Haram F08, marine ecologist and research associate at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, was recently featured in two NPR programs for her research studying marine life that collects on plastic trash in the open ocean. On All Things Considered she was interviewed about her findings, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and the ways in which our ocean compares to soup, and on Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, her research was featured in the Listener Limerick Challenge.

Douglas Brooks S80
“It is about trying to achieve a silent workshop, and teaching without teaching, or teaching with as few words as possible,” said Brooks. “Students learn they have to pay attention, they have to watch carefully, because that’s the way they learn.”
Douglas Brooks S80 was recently featured in the Harvard Gazette for a two-week workshop he taught on Japanese boat building at Harvard University’s Reischauer Institute. The 22-foot boat they constructed was then launched on the Charles River. Read to learn more about the workshop, see the techniques used in Japanese boatbuilding, and watch a timelapse video of the boat being constructed.

Anne Grimes Rand S86
“What I love about USS Constitution is not only that it's a historic ship, an undefeated warship, America’s ship of state, but it is an active ship. It is a living ship. It is still making history today,” Rand shared.
The USS Constitution Museum was recently presented with the 2023 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education on behalf of the National Maritime Historical Society. President and CEO Anne Grimes Rand S86, who has spent three decades at the Museum, accepted the award on the organization’s behalf. (You may remember Williams-Mystic won this award in 2019… we’re in good company!)
