Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir Spring Concert

Join the Emory University Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and the Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir (VOIS) for our annual Spring Concert. Dinner will be served immediatly following the concert.

Passover is a week long holiday marking the deliverance of the Israelites from bondage. Beginning with a festive meal called a seder and characterized by an abstention from leavened bread.

Holocaust Remembrance Day/Yom HaShoah Ceremony

Drawing on a variety of disciplinary lenses, Emory faculty Dr. Alicja Podbielska and Dr. Ofra Yeglin will reflect, in conversation with Tam Institute Director Dr. Miriam Udel, on how the memory of the Holocaust is encoded in history and culture in Europe, Israel, and the Americas.

Emory Ramadan 2023
March 22 - April 21, 2023
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, in which observing Muslims fast from all food and drink from dawn to sunset for a lunar month. Fasting is regarded as an essential spiritual practice for body, mind, and soul that is valued across Muslim communities.
The observance of fasting during the month of Ramadan is noted in the Qur'an and has come to represent the values of reflection, unity, celebration, and personal as well as communal growth. This year, the sacred month of Ramadan is expected to be observed from sundown March 22 through April 21, 2023. (These days could potentially shift one day based on the sighting of the moon.)
Emory Iftar Prayers and Dinner
The Muslim month of Ramadan will span March 22-April 21, 2023. During this time, Emory’s Muslim community will be observing with daily fasting from dawn through the sunlight hours and nightly iftar communal prayers and dinner. On Atlanta campus, weeknight prayer and dinner will occur at Cannon Chapel with gathering at about 7:45 p.m., followed by prayer and then dinner under the tent next to Cannon Chapel. Saturday and Sunday prayers and dinner will occur at the Emory Student Center. Weeknight iftars are hosted by OSRL, MSA, GMSC, Emory Muslim Alumni, and several Emory Schools, divisions, and units.

Pride Awards: Maury Allums Recieves the Dean Susan Henry-Crowe Keeping the Faith Award
On Thursday, March 30 at Miller-Ward Alumni House, OSRL's Music Director, Maury Allums, was this year's receipient of the Emory Office of LGBT Life Dean Susan Henry-Crowe Keeping the Faith award. This award is named in honor of Dean Henry-Crowe’s 22 years as the Dean of the Chapel and Religious Life at Emory University, during which time she increased inclusion for the LGBTQ community at Emory and became a beacon of social justice within the United Methodist Church.

Inter-Religious Council's Graduating Women of Promise
On March 29, the Emory Center for Women tapped 50 graduating senior women as "Graduating Women of Promise." "This ceremony honors graduating women who have demonstrated leadership, inclusivity, and a commitment to making Emory a better place for all." Several of the honorees this year are members of Emory's Inter-Religious Council (IRC) and current or former OSRL Student Workers. We are extremely proud of these graduating interfaith leaders who have made Emory better through their time on campus.

Emory Buddhist Club: Spring Clothing Swap 2023

The EBC Clothing Swap is back. Refresh your spring wardrobe and donate clothes you no longer wear at the EBC Spring Clothing Swap. We are hosting this event to promote Buddhist virtues such as generosity and sharing, and we’d love to get our members—as well as the wider Emory community—involved.
Here’s how it works:
- Drop off items of clothing you no longer want at one of the campus collection boxes starting Monday, March 20th until Tuesday, April 4th. There will be collection boxes in several convenient locations across campus, such as in the WoodPec, SAAC, AMUC Suite 125 (OSRL), Woodruff Library entrance, or Cannon Chapel.
- Come to the clothing swap after collection ends to find new clothes. You may also hand in your old clothes on the day of the event as well.
- All remaining items will be donated to local nonprofits/homeless shelters or recycled—nothing goes to the landfill.

Join the Buddhist Club for Buddhist meditation this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. You may also come as early as 5:30 p.m. for a period of community and snacking while we prepare for the meditation session at 6:00 p.m.
This meditation will be led by Professor Tara Doyle. Currently a senior research fellow at Candler School of Theology, Dr. Tara Doyle is a senior lecturer in the Department of Religion at Emory College of Arts and Sciences. “Her areas of research are in Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage, ex-untouchable Buddhist converts, contemplative practices, and Socially Engaged Buddhism” , although she devotes time to developing study abroad programs in India and in Theory Practice Learning Pedagogy as well. Prior to coming to Emory, Professor Doyle taught at Williams College (1995-1997), and was the co-founder and co-director of Antioch University's Comparative Buddhist Studies Program in Bodh Gaya, India (1979-1994); she earned her PhD, MA, MTS, from Harvard University, and her BS from Antioch College.

A special guest lecture by Dr. Wesley Leonard, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies UC Riverside and co-chair Natives4Linguistics.
“Language reclamation refers to a framework of Indigenous language revitalization that centers community needs, wellbene, and goals, while concurrenuy addressing the underlying causes of language shift such as colonialism, racism, and the hegemony of dominant language ideologies and practices. With its focus on Indigenous ways of knowing, language reclamation centers Indigenous definitions of "language" at all stages; similarly, Indigenous ways of knowing become the baseline for planning, doing, and assessing language work.
In this presentation, I reflect upon my lived experiences as a Miami linguist long engaged in language reclamation, both in my own tribal community and across academic fields such as Indigenous Studies and Linguistics. I outline how many dominant approaches to Indigenous language research, teaching, and advocacy can reinforce colonial logics and power structures that inhibit language reclamation and offer alternatives that center Indigenous needs, protocols, and intellectual traditions.”

Delegate applications for the Youth Sustainability Development Conference at Emory 2023 are now open. This two-and-a-half day conference (Aug 25-27) on Emory University’s campus will convene youth leaders to engage in energy justice learning, discussion, and innovation. The conference will consist of lectures, panels, and a case study challenge. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of energy justice solutions and connections to other youth and professionals that may lead to future mentorship and career opportunities. Great Lent
Ongoing through Sat., Apr. 15, 2023
Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox
In Orthodox churches, the first day of Lent marks the beginning of the Great Fast, the final six weeks of a 10-week period leading up to Holy Week and Easter (Pascha). In the churches that follow the Gregorian calendar, Lent is a six-week observance (40 days excluding Sundays) beginning with Ash Wednesday and culminating in Holy Week. It is a time of repentance and sacrifice in preparation for Easter.

The Holy Month of Ramadan is the month of fasting during which Muslims who are physically able do not eat or drink from the first sign of dawn until sunset in honor of the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. The evening meal is celebrated with family.

Celebrates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, marking the beginning of Holy Week that culminates in Easter or Pascha. In some churches, Palm Sunday is combined with the anticipation of Christ's death and so is also known as "Passon Sunday." Orthodox Christians often observe this Sunday on a date different from the date on which Protestant and Roman Catholics observe it.

Passover commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It is celebrated for eight days with special prayers and symbolic foods at home, starting with the Seder, a ritual meal that re-enacts that ancient deliverance and emphasizes the freedom of the Jews under the guidance of God. The first two and the last two days are holidays.

Commemorates the institution of the Lord's Supper/the Eucharist by Jesus prior to his arrest and execution. "Maundy" is derived from the Latin text of John 13:34, in which Jesus gives a mandatum novum ("new commandment"). The date observed by Protestants and Roman Catholics differs from the date observed by Orthodox Christians.

Commemorates the Passion of Jesus Christ, i.e., his death by crucifixion. Observed as Holy Friday by Orthodox Christians on a different date from the one observed by Protestants and Roman Catholics.
