Another round of ATMIA Academy scholarships
Earlier this year, Visa agreed to sponsor scholarships for 10, International ATM Operators Certification programs, from the ATMIA Academy. These courses are designed for ATM operators/owners doing business in regional, national and global markets. Content draws on the collective knowledge of ATMIA members, and is based on extensive research into the operating practices and procedures of ATM businesses worldwide.
There are five courses comprising complete ATM Operator responsibilities with several short, interactive and highly informative sessions. A click and learn-at-your-own-pace approach provides flexibility to control progress through each session on your own schedule and terms.
The first group of scholarships was announced on April 25th. Five more ATMIA members now have another opportunity to capture a scholarship for ATM operator certification.
Applications for a scholarship accepted through Friday, Sept 20, 2019.
Requirements
The following are requirements for each applicant:
- Must be employed within the ATM industry
- Employer must be an ATMIA member in good standing
- Must commit to completing the entire curriculum
- Only one (1) scholarship will be awarded per organization

Applicant must submit a letter explaining why he/she is interested in completing this program. Letters must be less than 500 words and sent to ATMIA USA executive director, David Tente, including contact information. Please also include the word 'scholarship' in the subject

Download Best Practices for Cash in Transit – USA
Current events and statistics have been included in a new “Introduction” chapter to provide an overview of the crime landscape for CIT providers and as a reminder of the importance of due diligence and following industry best practices. In recent years there has been a significant increase in cash thefts associated with CIT carriers at their vaults, in transit and after the funds have been loaded into the ATM.
In an effort to foster a better and easier understanding of the manual, a “Key Terminology” chapter was added to the end. This new chapter includes detailed definitions for 62 key terms that are used throughout the manual, a few of which may not be familiar. Fraud survey results now available
The percentage of respondents reporting a general increase in ATM crime rose slightly from 54% in 2017 to 58% this year, the report found. Specific types of threats are covered in the study, including ATM skimming, PIN compromise, deposit-related fraud, cash trapping, dispenser jackpotting, transaction reversal fraud, card trapping, eavesdropping, card data malware, shimming chip card data, network packet sniffing, as well as remote and other network compromise for card data.
Members of ATMIA receive a free Executive Summary but those wishing to access the full report should consider becoming ASA subscribers. This will also give you access to the new Theoretical Risk Register which assesses the risks of types of attack happening in other channels and other sectors migrating to the ATM channel in the near future. Another state gets on the Cashless Ban'd WagonJust this week, Wisconsin has become the 8th state and the 13th jurisdiction to propose a ban on cashless retail establishments; with a total of three states where it is now law.
Similar bills in Connecticut and Oregon failed upon adjournment of the legislative session, but are expected to be reintroduced. However, in a surprise move recently, Massachusetts legislators introduced bills in the state House and Senate to repeal their long-standing ban of cashless retail stores. Bill filings did not include any explanation for why this action has been taken. They were introduced in the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection. ATMIA has contacted the bills' sponsors, as well as the Senate and House committee chairs to voice opposition and describe the impact of the measure.
No further action has been taken on either of the bills introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, ATMIA has learned that a companion bill to HR 2650 (Rep. Payne) may be introduced in the Senate.

IAD Focus Group holds first meetingThe IAD Focus Group, led by U.S. Regional Board co-chair Donna Embry, was formed to discuss the impact of NextGen ATMs on independent operators. ATMIA is interested in learning what NextGen means to IADs and their businesses, and this group will serve as representatives of the IAD community.
Too many IADs are feeling comfortable and have little concern over the current O/S migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10 – primarily because most are utilizing Windows Embedded Compact 2013, which will be with us until 2023. The simple fact of the matter, however, is that standard support for CE ended last year and we are already in a period of extended support. Four years ahead of its end-of-life is not too soon to begin considering what the next O/S transition will look like for retail ATMs.
The end result of this Focus Group is expected be a roadmap for how IADs can become NextGen Champions. Members will discuss what will work best for IADs; what needs to be done; whether there are gaps in the existing blueprint; where we need to push to get results; and more. ATMIA U.S. annual conference update - Houston 2020 Plan now to join your industry colleagues February 11-13, 2020 at the Hilton Americas in Houston, TX. Our theme of “Launching the ATM Industry into a New Era” will have us focused on the industry’s Next-Gen ATMs initiative and a world of exciting new capabilities in the self-service channel.

New Work Group formingATMIA is standing up a Software Packaging and Distribution Work Group. It grew from requests by several members to address the growing challenges involved with bundling/packaging software updates and distributing them to sometimes far-flung fleets of ATMs. The delivery vehicle of choice is typically a USB stick, which can create logistical and management pitfalls for fleets of any size.
The group is having its first regular meeting this week. Participation is open to both financial institution and independent ATM deployers, as well as manufacturers, service providers, and any organization involved in software maintenance processes.
