Celebrating Our First WISE Interfaith Pre-Orientation

| The Emory University Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) is delighted to have completed the inaugural year of our WISE (Welcoming Interfaith and Spiritual Exploration) Pre-Orientation Program. This program is designed to welcome entering first-year students to Emory's Atlanta campus while providing an opportunity to learn about faiths and interfaith, social justice, and explore campus and Atlanta.
We are grateful to our 26 first year student particiants and 12 returning student peer mentors for their engagement throughout a week of activities, including a sacred music concert at Glenn Memorial Church, visiting the Hindu Temple of Atlanta, sharing Langar Lunch at the Sikh Study Circle Gurdwara, joining in Jum'ah Prayers at the Al-Farooq Masjid, practicing meditation with Emory Buddhist Club, and enjoying the rest of Shabbat at Hillel at Emory. We're excited to continue working with these interfaith leaders for years to come.

Spiritual Life Resource Fair 2021
On Tuesday, August 24, OSRL hosted a Spiritual Life Resource Fair on Cox Hall Bridge, which gave students the opportunity to connect with student leaders, religious life affiliates, and OSRL staff from a variety of religious and philosophical communities. There were snow cones, iced coffee, cookies, and great conversations about ways to get involved.
We have also been able to meet students at resources fairs at the Candler School of Theology, the Laney Graduate School, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the School of Law. Our team is looking forward to participating in fairs at the Goizueta Business School and Woodruff School of Nursing next week.

Rollins School Feature: Emory OSRL Faith in the Vaccine ProgramOn August 18, Emory OSRL, the IFYC Faith and the Vaccine Project, and Emory Healthcare partnered to host a mobile vaccine clinic at the Toco Hill Community Alliance. As the Delta variant is circulating in the United States, we are very grateful to our community for participating as both volunteers and recipients at the clinic. We are delighted to say that 36 people were vaccinated at the mobile clinic and we were able to help bring the clinic to the community. Thank you to everyone who made it happen.

International Community Friday Lunch

International Community Friday Lunch (formerly called International Coffee Hour) is a long-standing collaboration between the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The purpose of this gathering is to extend a warm welcome and build a community for international students and scholars. We seek to support international students’ and scholars’ physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being as well as to cultivate a sense of belonging in the Emory community by fostering multi-faith and intercultural exchange and friendships.
International Community Friday Lunch occurs every Friday throughout the semester beginning on September 10.

Welcoming Day of Service on 9/11/21

Volunteer Emory is hosting its annual large-scale day of service, Emory’s Welcoming Day of Service, on Saturday, September 11, 2021. This event is a chance for all current Emory students to come together to volunteer around Atlanta, from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm, followed by a short on-site reflection session. Emory Buddhist Club Guided Meditation
Thursdays, 6:00 p.m., Starting August 26, Cannon Chapel or Zoom
We will kick off the fall 2021 semester with a hybrid combined in person and online (same Zoom link) starting Thursday, August 26 and every Thursday at 6:00 p.m., in Cannon Chapel and on Zoom, all are welcome either physically or virtually. Note: Emory policy is to wear face masks while indoors.
For the first two weeks, meditation will be led by The Venerable Priya Sraman, Emory's new Buddhist Chaplain. Venerable Priya comes from Bangladesh, was ordained and trained as a monastic in Sri Lanka, and studied in Thailand and Hong Kong, prior to coming to the US and earning a degree from Harvard Divinity School. First Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir Rehearsal of the Year

The Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir, Emory's longstanding and dynamic gospel choir, welcomes all who desire to praise God with song and serve as taught in God's word. They sing at Beloved Community Worship the fourth Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. in Cannon Chapel, offers one campus concert each semester, and sings at university events such as Baccalaureate and other occasions. In addition, VOIS has offered an annual service learning trip in the continental U.S. or abroad during Spring Break and sings at churches around Atlanta and performs acts of service locally.
The choir welcomes enthusiastic singers who want to explore or join in its ministry of music. Rehearsals take place weekly during the academic year on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. in White Hall 101, and will begin on September 3. In the Wake of Slavery and Dispossession: Emory, Racism, and the Journey Towards Restorative Justice Symposium
September 29 - October 1, 2021. Hybrid format on Emory’s Atlanta and Oxford campuses, with in-person and virtual sessions, as well as physical and digital exhibits.
The symposium is open to the public at no charge. Many universities are examining their histories and discovering their connections to slave labor and Indigenous dispossession. This symposium will highlight the ongoing efforts and research in the areas of slavery, dispossession, and restorative justice, with a focus on the legacy of racism and its enduring effects at Emory University. The sessions will include creative interpretations and dialogue, with a primary focus on the perspectives of Black, Native American, and Indigenous peoples.

Love in Action: Afghanistan
Bread Coffeehouse is partnering with Atlanta Christian Church and New American Pathways, a non-profit organization that works with refugees here in the state of Georgia. They are currently focused on supporting refugees from Afghanistan, and we want to lend a hand to our neighbors in need by donating items that help with basic daily needs.
For the next few weeks, we'll be collecting these items at Bread (1227 Clifton Rd, Atlanta, GA 30307):

Krishna Janmashtami (Sri Krishna Jayanti or Janmashtami)

Tradition: Hinduism
Celebrates the birthday of Krishna. According to the Hindu epics, Krishna was the eighth incarnation of the God Vishnu, opposed to the demon Kansa, who was responsible for the increase of evil in the world. Worship of Krishna is characteristically expressed in dance and song.
Paryusana Festival
Fri., Sep. 3 – Fri., Sep. 10, 2021
Tradition: Jainism
Considered the holiest period of the year, these eight days are marked for Jains by fasting, meditation, prayer and public readings of the life story of Lord Mahavira. Observed especially by the followers of the Shvetambara sect, Paryusana concludes on Samvatsari, the most solemn occasion of self-scrutiny and forgiveness. On this day, Jains ask for forgiveness from their relatives and friends for any offense they may have committed by deed, word or thought.
Rosh Hashanah

Tradition: Judaism
The Jewish New Year and the anniversary of the creation of the world, Rosh Hashanah is the first of the Ten Days of Awe (also known as the Ten Days of Repentance) that conclude on Yom Kippur. It marks the beginning of the holiest time of the year for Jews.
