A New Class of Neighborhood Tree Stewards Celebrates Graduation Day
The 2018 Neighborhood Tree Stewards show off their new class hoodies.
Meet the 2018 Neighborhood Tree Steward graduates!
On October 20th, the newest graduating class completed the Neighborhood Tree Steward (NTS) program, joining the ranks of NTS alumni going back almost 10 years! During their final class, the Stewards planted three Oregon white oaks and three ponderosa pine trees at North Powellhurst Park, adding new beauty, benefits, and character to the park.
Over the last two months, the NTS program introduced the 28 participants to ideas, skills, and programs that they can use to help advocate and care for trees in their neighborhoods. Each week, the classes had presentations and workshops from many tree experts who introduced the Stewards to tree identification, pruning, benefits of the urban forest, and more.
The Stewards will be volunteering a minimum of 40 hours over the next year as they continue to learn and use the information from the program to give back to their neighborhoods. They are excited to join Portland's large community of tree advocates by getting involved with their local Tree Teams, attending Urban Forestry events, and creating collaborations for their own stewardship projects.
Congratulations to the Neighborhood Tree Stewards class of 2018!
For more information about the course, please see the NTS homepage here.
