Up, Up, and Study Away!
NYU Shanghai welcomed a record 129 students for Study Away this Fall semester. From language learning to cultural immersion, students are looking forward to an exciting semester of new experiences and plenty of travel in China.

| Chen Jian on Zhou Enlai: A Life Distinguished Global Network Professor of History Chen Jian’s new book, Zhou Enlai: A Life, examines the life of one of China’s most renowned premiers and diplomats. Chen shared the story of how the book came to be and his insights about Zhou’s era in a talk to a standing room only audience on September 9.

The SoFiE Summer School, hosted by VINS, returned to NYU Shanghai in August for the seventh year, welcoming young scholars from across Europe, North America, and Asia. This year’s theme, Financial Machine Learning, reflected the growing importance of machine learning and AI in transforming financial research and practice.

Mooncakes and Memories
Mooncake season is upon us! Students from China and around the world share their favorite mooncake flavors and childhood memories. Whether gazing at the moon, going on a mooncake crawl, or enjoying a meal together, students plan to make this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival a special one.

• This week NYU Shanghai welcomed Linda Mills for her second visit to the campus as NYU President. President Mills attended the annual Reality Show, met with the NYU Shanghai Board of Directors, and paid a visit to the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum.
• The 2024 International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC) was held over the summer at NYU Shanghai with 600 participants. A creative technique exploring the fusion of performance art and interactive programming, live coding has garnered a global community since its inception in 2003. Assistant Professors Eric Parren and Gottfried Haider said that bringing this novel art form to China allowed them to “discover the state of live coding in China and neighboring countries.” Alongside 65 professional international judges, they curated over 30 conference sessions out of over 80 applications from 23 countries.
• Nearly 60 students, faculty, and staff gathered on Wednesday evening to watch a replay of the US Presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Assistant Professor Ivan Rasmussen, who organized the watch party, analyzed the debate and key points with students afterwards.

What is Art’s Effect on Loneliness?
NYU Steinhardt will host a symposium on “The Art and Science of Social Connection,” on September 18, bringing together faculty, researchers, and artists in panel discussions and presentations on the power of art to combat loneliness and create connected communities.

• Another class of students graduated from 2024 Summer Chinese Language Immersion Program
This summer, over 40 students – including a few from top US colleges – signed up for the nine-week program to learn the language through in-class training, cultural activities, and field trips. ICS documented their experiences through a three-episode mini-documentary.
• How universities in Shanghai welcome new students
Last week, NYU Shanghai welcomed Class of 2028 through a mix of educational sessions and team-building fun activities. Orientation Week was featured in Jiefang Daily.
