Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
September 2021
Dear Volunteers,
Happy September! With Flower Piano right around the corner we have lots of volunteer needs that still to be filled, as well as some of our usual roles.
We have a few updates for you about some positions, the exciting arrival of our language buttons, and more!

Flower Piano

September 17-21, 2021
Flower Piano is closer than ever!
If you haven't signed up for a volunteer role yet, consider doing so now. This magical event is fueled by volunteer support. If you are still looking for ways to support we have a few options for you.
Flower Piano could not happen without the financial support of sponsors, donors, and the community! One of the most criticial volunteer roles for this event is supporting the Membership Table and encouraging guests to sign-up for a membership of their own, or inviting guests to make a Donation to support this wonderful event.
Although we do not offer tours during this event, Docents are invited to be Rovers during Flower Piano, moving throughout the Garden to provide support to visitors. We still have a few openings left!
Check the shift calendar to see what else might still have openings, or email volunteer@sfbg.org to be placed.
Watch the Flower Piano video orientation here, or join us on Wednesday, 9/15 at the Main Gate of the Garden for our in-person orientation to learn more about volunteering during this event!
Additional Plant Arbor Roles
With the Plant Arbor and the Bookstore official sister stores, Whitney and Diane have been working hard to improve things together. We're excited to announce the addition of another Plant Arbor role with a new table set-up called Garden Information. At this Garden Information table, volunteers will be provided with an iPad with internet connection so you can access the Garden's website, as well as Garden Explorer, or internet search to look up your own questions. There will also be a binder with Frequently Asked Questions, maps of the Garden and GGP, and past Garden highlights in the form of Wednesday Wonders written by the Plant Collections team.
This additional role was created as we strive to make the Plant Arbor a more resourceful place for customers and visitors alike. It will take place on weekdays only, and will especially help us in the lead-up to and surrounding Flower Piano. No previous Plant Arbor experience required!
Volunteer Check-In
Something not showing up right during check-in? Have a question about shifts? You're always welcome to email volunteer@sfbg.org with any questions or concerns. This is the fastest and easiest way to resolve any issues with your name or shift. Thank you!
Language Buttons
Are you a regularly scheduled public facing volunteer who speaks another language? We'd love for you to get one of our new language buttons for you to wear for your shift! Please email volunteer@sfbg.org with your name, regular role, and what language button(s) you would like so we can arrange to get them to you.

Slices of Joy

  • We say goodbye to Matthew Stephens and his more than 5 years of service to the gardens of Golden Gate Park; as Garden Director at San Francisco Recreation & Parks, we're sad to see him go, but wish him well on his well-deserved new role as the President & CEO of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. Congrats, Matthew!

  • The Garden recently hosted the current cohort of Climate Corps Education Outside educators as they prepare to work in public schools here in the city and nearby communities. They used the Garden to gain practical knowledge about how to work with kids outdoors and maintain a scohol garden. As part of their training, they helped improve the west end of the Children's Garden!

  • Nursery activity is underway! The hazardous material removal has been completed, and soon apprentices will do vegetation removal for all the plants that have grown back recently. The next construction milestone will be Lath House and Greenhouse demolition, which is scheduled for shortly after Flower Piano.

  • Welcome new staff! We have 9 new staff members joining us this month: Felicia, Fiona, Elizabeth, Darieus, Milvia, Vern, Julie, Cece, and Emily. If you see new faces around the Garden, you're always welcome to stop and introduce yourself!
Thank you for all that you do and have done for the Garden!
Warmly,
Jenn
