Director's Message
Sydney Nano has completed it's 3-year review as a multidisciplinary institute, and I would like to thank everyone who participated in the process for their contribution and continuing support of Sydney Nano. The panel interviewed many stakeholders over three days and were very grateful for the perspectives and key insights provided. We look forward to seeing their report and recommendations in the near future, which will be shared with the broader Sydney Nano community.
We are planning a COVID-safe Sydney Nano 2020 Retreat that will inform our strategic goals and alignment with Faculties for 2021 to be held later this year. Please stay tuned for more information.
I would like to congratulate Prof Stephen Bartlett for being elected Fellow of the American Physical Society; Prof Hala Zreiqat for her successful NHMRC Equipment Grant; Professor Chiara Neto and the ACWA team for being selected as a finalist in the Bridge Hub 2020 Water Challenge; Dr John Bartholomew and Prof Mike Biercuk for their achievements in the Million Dollar International Quantum U Tech Accelerator; Dr Cornelius Hempel and Dr Zengxia Pei for being named as top researchers in their research fields by The Australian; and Dr Lining Arnold Ju, Associate Professor Alice Motion and my research team (Dr Eric Mägi, Dr Moritz Merklein, Dr Alvaro Casas Bedoya and Dr Yang Liu) for being named as Eureka Prize finalists. Well done everyone!

Million Dollar International Quantum U Tech Accelerator winners
We would like to congratulate Dr John Bartholomew and Prof Michael Biercuk for their recent success in the Million Dollar International Quantum U Tech Accelerator hosted by the Innovare Advancement Center and the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate. Sydney Nano Member Dr John Bartholomew, Director of the Quantum Integration Laboratory, was one of 5 winners in the Quantum Communucations section. His live research pitch centred on a solution for connecting quantum computers through optical fibre networks, which now qualifies for a share of the US$1M+ in research funding. Prof Michael Biercuk, founder and CEO of Q-CTRL, a University of Sydney spin off and resident in the Sydney Nanoscience Hub, received an award in the Quantum Sensing category partnering with ANU. Their project targets quantum enhanced inertial navigation.
