Dear Volunteers,
I am happy to share our 2024 Annual Report with you. This past fiscal year, over 1,000 volunteers supported the Gardens in a myriad of ways from helping in the Children's Garden to leading tours. A significant number of individuals volunteered during group service events to build community and support our horticulture team, while others jumped in to help make Flower Piano a success.
With 1,207,652 visitors to the Gardens this past year, your support has been instrumental in welcoming our visitors and caring for the collections so that everyone may enjoy the Gardens. We are excited to see what we can accomplish this year with your support, and we're delighted to invite you to our 7th Annual Member & Volunteer Briefing on Monday, February 3 from 5:30-6:30pm. Register here for this online event.

Interpretive Volunteer Training |
Magnificent Magnolias Interpretation Station Training Friday, January 31, 1:30-3:30pm
Auditorium, County Fair Building
As we prepare for Magnificent Magnolias, we are excited to extend this training opportunity to volunteers eager to learn how to lead an interpretation station in the Botanical Garden. This opportunity is ideal for volunteers interested in making a regular commitment to facilitate our outdoor interpretive station focused on Magnolias between January through March. Peak Magnolia Bloom, which lasts for around two weeks, will be announced on February 4! Having experience volunteering in different parts of the Gardens can help build the foundation for success so we recommend that volunteers have completed at least four assignments in some area of the Gardens such as Green Teams, Plant Shop, Library, or Bookstore prior to the training.

Education Coordinator Nichole Davis traveled to the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. earlier this month for the first in-person meeting of the learning cohort for the Plants and Climate Change Education (PLACCE) program. This peer learning group is dedicated to learning together; creating and testing plant-centered climate change education models; and sharing new understandings, resources, and best practices across the public garden community. Gardens of Golden Gate Park is one of six public gardens selected to participate and will be focusing on incorporating climate change education models into the multi-visit school program in the Children's Garden.
Follow this link to see what great new books have been added to the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture. Of special interest is The Serviceberry, a new work by Robin Wall Kimmerer: a Potawatomi botanist, author, and the director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. We were honored to have her as our special guest speaker a few years ago. Volunteers interested in activating or renewing a Gardens membership to obtain a Library Card should complete this form to access your sliding scale membership.
The Conservatory of Flowers was featured in a Gardenista article featuring quotes from Director of Collections & Conservation Ryan Guillou that were coordinated with Chief Nursery Specialist Kristen Natoli. Gardenista has its own large, nearly perfect audience for the Gardens, and as an extra benefit the article was also picked up and posted on MSN expanding the article’s reach to their massive global audience.
The Japanese Tea Garden served as the inspiration for one of the recently installed “Hearts in San Francisco,” an annual Valentine’s Day tradition in its 21st year where giant hearts are placed at landmarks all over the city. The new Japanese Tea Garden inspired heart by artist Isabelle Hung is placed at the Ferry Building and is featured in this recent SFist article.
It’s officially Magnificent Magnolia season at the Botanical Garden! Several trees are already showing off saucer-sized pink blooms—the Magnolia campbellii 'Darjeeling' in the Temperate Asia garden, is a must-see right now with more dramatic deep pink flowers blooming each day. Explore the Southeast Asian Cloud Forest to see a spectacular display of cream-colored flowers from Magnolia denudata across from Magnolia 'Royal Crown'. 'Royal Crown' flowers can grow up to 10 inches when fully expanded. Finally, you must visit M. campbellii in the Rhododendron Garden. The large Magnolia Maps are now up by both entrances. Learn more and find magnolia-themed programming and the Magnolia Map on our website at gggp.org/magnolias.
