Home repair is a growing need in our community, especially among low-income homeowners, senior citizens, disabled veterans and more. Many people living alone needs exterior work that includes painting, patching, minor repair, landscaping, and replacement of exterior building materials or handicapped accessible ramps built or repaired. For many, maintaining their homes in sound condition is simply beyond their financial and/or physical ability. It is estimated that in Rio Rancho alone, more than 300 homes need these types of repairs.
Enter Greater Albuquerque’s Home Preservation and Repair program. Currently in its second year, we have completed 94 home repairs in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Corrales.

|
| Why is the repair so vital to Habitat?
The repair program is a more environmentally sustainable way to allow senior citizens and people with disabilities to safely and comfortably remain in their homes longer. While new construction is typically more glamorous, our repair program is able to serve over 40 families a year in our community,
What is the most profound impact to a homeowner?
I think the most profound impact to the homeowner is knowing they have a community full of people who care enough to assist them with their home, and are willing to take the time to volunteer.

An individual who is 70½ years old and is required to take annual minimum required distributions from his or her IRA may make payments directly from the IRA of up to $100,000 to qualifying charities. The amount “rolled over” to charity counts toward the minimum required distribution without being taxed to the IRA owner as income.
The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers to make tax-free charitable gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, including colleges, universities, and non- profits like Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity.
Currently, the provision:
|
- Caps qualified charitable IRA distributions at $100,000 per person per year,
-
Precludes the funding of gift annuities and similar life income plans and
- Applies only to donors age 70½ or older.
|
|
|
- The donor requests his or her IRA plan administrator to transfer funds to a charitable organization.
-
The IRA administrator transfers funds directly to the charity.
- This "qualified charitable distribution" is excluded from the donor's adjusted gross income.
|
|
|
-
Required IRA distributions may increase an individual's adjusted gross income and increase the percentage of Social Security payments on which he or she must pay tax. By choosing to make a charitable distribution with all or part of their required IRA distribution, donors may reduce income and reduce the percentage of Social Security subject to taxation.
-
IRA account holders over age 70½ are subject to required distribution rules. Qualified charitable distributions from IRA accounts count toward the owner's required minimum distributions.
- The IRA rollover allows donors who do not itemize deductions to contribute IRA assets to charities and enjoy tax benefits like those derived from claiming itemized charitable deductions.
-
As in all our Planned Giving articles, we encourage you to consult with your tax and financial advisers before making distributions and to inform charities about your intended gifts.

2023 State Fair Expo
Calling All Volunteers |
Cotton Candy, turkey legs, crazy heart-stopping rides, arts and crafts, animals of all shapes and sizes, the rodeo and live music – the crazy, fun-filled and exciting days of the 2023 NM State Fair are back, and we need volunteers.
Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity will host a large booth the entire eleven days of this year’s fair, from 10:00am to 8:00pm daily. And we are looking for volunteers to help us run the booth every day.
Located near the main entrance off Central Ave, the H4H Expo will include games, educational information, interactive activities, prizes, and giveaways. All volunteers will receive free parking and a meal voucher for their lunch or dinner, depending upon what shift they are working.
With a staff of only 25 people to cover our daily operations and our Restore, we depend on the support and kindness of our volunteers. In this case, we will need 8-10 volunteers for two shifts each day. We will always have a staff point of contact for each shift and a few other staff present to work at the fair, but we cannot do this without additional volunteers.
We will have drinks and snacks available for all volunteers as well as a private area to sit, relax and cool off away from the crowds.
Our volunteers are our lifeblood, and we could never accomplish all we do without you.
Please consider helping us by contacting Regina Red, Volunteer Coordinator at Regina@HabitatABQ.org for more information or to schedule your shift(s). If you know of anyone who would be interested in helping, please refer them to Regina. Volunteers must be 16 years of age.
