Take a break from finals and join the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life (OSRL) and our Religious Life Affiliates on Cox Bridge for hot drinks, sweet treats, and fun giveaways in replace of our annual late-night pancake breakfast.

Chanukah Celebration
Emory Celebrates Chanukah
On Monday, November 29, Emory’s Office of Spiritual and Religious Life, in conjunction with the Bayit, Chabad, Hillel, and Meor, hosted a festive candle lighting to celebrate the second night of Chanukah. There was hot cider and Chanukah snacks, such as latkes and doughnuts. We are grateful to those who came to shine light and share joy with the whole Emory community. To continue in celebration, we encourage you to participate in the many Chanukah events on and off campus, listed below in Upcoming Programs.

On December 8, join us for our final and special midweek musical meditation of the fall semester where we will be joined by members of the OSRL team and the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA). We’ll be taking a few minutes to share some reflections in the spirit of gratitude as we wind down for the end of the semester. Following the reflections, we welcome you to stay on for a gratitude-themed discussion with our panel as well as an interactive Q and A. All are welcome.

Beloved Community Protestant Worship
Sunday, December 5, 11:00 a.m. service, 12:00 p.m. lunch (outside), Cannon Chapel
Beloved Community gathers each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. during the academic year. Worship is ecumenical and planned especially for the campus setting, providing a variety of worship experiences for the Emory community. Preachers include Emory chaplains and affiliates, Emory faculty, and distinguished guests from the U.S. and abroad.

Buddhist Guided Meditation and Discussion

Join us for a guided Buddhist meditation this Thursday at 6pm. This week, EBC is pleased to welcome back Venerable Geshe Phende. He is a monk from Drepung Loseling Monastery in Atlanta. Geshe Phende joined the Drepung Loseling Monastery in South India in 1982 and completed his monastic education there. He then attended Guymey Monastery for further Tantric studies and then proceeded to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was the resident teacher at the Lam Rim Tibetan Buddhist Center. He is now a resident teacher at DLM Atlanta.
On Thursday, Geshe Phende will lead a Buddhist meditation and reflection. He will lead a discussion titled “How to Cultivate a Calm and Peaceful Mind” In introducing this topic, he writes "All happiness and suffering have their basis in the mind. Therefore, if we learn how to cultivate our minds effectively, we learn how to cultivate peace and happiness in our lives. In this talk, we will look at techniques for cultivating calm, happy, and peaceful minds.” Please note that EBC’s last meeting of the semester will be next week on Thursday December 9.

Glenn Memorial Church: A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

For many Atlantans, the start of the Yuletide season begins with Emory University's annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Performed by the Emory University Concert Choir and University Chorus, this magical melding of scripture lessons read in conjunction with the performance of international carols has been an Atlanta tradition since 1935. The benediction will also be led by Emory's Christian Chaplain, Maddie Henderson.

Join the Hindu Students Association for Aarti, a form of worship in which a lamp is circled around a symbol, image, or deity while singing prayers of veneration. Aarti is a ritual by which Hindus connect devotionally to their spiritual and/or religious principles.

Epiphany's Nativities, 300 Crêches from around the World

For the twenty-fifth holiday season, the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany presents an exhibit of nativity scenes. From the elegant to the eccentric, the birth scenes are sculpted in materials ranging from carved wood to volcanic ash. In the narthex and gallery, there will be a special exhibit of nativity scenes that highlight the difference between the birth story as told in the Gospels of Luke and Mathew. “Shine a Light On Antisemitism” Atlanta Community Hanukkah Celebration
Sunday, December 5, 7:00-8:30 p.m., MJCCA Zaban Park
Join for a community-wide Hanukkah celebration to shine a light on the recent rise in antisemitism and delegitimization of Israel. Explore community and individual responses to antisemitism in all of its modern forms. Guest speakers include Virág Gulyás, the NYC coordinator for End Jew Hatred, a grassroots civil rights movement dedicated to ensuring Jewish liberation from centuries of persecution and achieving justice for the Jewish people through peaceful direct action; and Gerard Filitti, a New York City-based human rights attorney. He serves as Senior Counsel at The Lawfare Project, a Jewish civil rights litigation fund and think tank that focuses on matters of civil and human rights, anti-Semitism, discrimination and counterterrorism.
The program will include the lighting of the Hanukkah Menorah, entertainment, free jelly donuts, dreidels, and more. All are welcome. Register here by searching "Shine a Light".

Springtide Ambassadors Program 2022
Young people ages 13 to 23 throughout the U.S. are invited to apply to be a part of the 2022 SAP cohort. SAP members are able to develop and hone different communication and leadership skills while building connections across lines of difference. This year’s cohort contributed to print and website publications, were quoted in The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, participated in Instagram Live conversations, walked through cover design decisions for our flagship report, contributed video clips that were used in presentations of our research findings, and more.

COVID Chronicles Youth Writing Fellowship 
The COVID Chronicles Writing Fellowship is a 3-month program to help youth and young adults (14-21 years of age) from across the country elevate their voice and share how COVID-19 has impacted themselves and their communities. Through this program, fellows will be paired with dedicated mentors who have proven track records in elevating health equity and social justice issues in the press, social media, and through academic discourse. Fellows will receive real-time feedback on their creative outputs — which can be essays, poetry, video, or other relevant formats — and will be supported in getting their work elevated to high-impact media, journalistic, and academic outlets.
Each fellow will be awarded a $500 stipend for participating. The fellowship runs from December 15 2021 to March 10 2022. A total of 10 fellows will be accepted. The online application can be accessed hereFor more information or to ask questions, please contact Grace Harrington.

ERGs are employee-led groups established around common interests or identities. ERGs enable employees to create supportive professional communities and provide opportunities for networking, mentoring, advocacy, and professional development. Pastoral Care
All of the chaplains in OSRL are available for pastoral care, which is a form of confidential care and counseling provided by spiritual and humanistic leaders. As practiced by OSRL, it is offered to Emory students, faculty, and staff members of all faiths and no faith, and it makes no assumptions about a person's faith or practice. It can be as simple as a listening ear for emotional and existential support, or it can involve exploring beliefs, teachings, scriptures, and rituals.
