Teach-In on Race

March 18-19
The Teach-In is an annual academic and creative event, sponsored by Academic Affairs and the President's Office in coordination with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, designed to engage the community in active learning about race and racism. The alumni community is invited to attend select programming including: 
  • Keynote from Dr. Eve L. Ewing, sociologist, award-winning author, poet, and visual artist from Chicago, Illinois.
  • Looking Back, Looking Forward: Study and struggle at Emerson through the years. Jessica Chance '00 moderates a conversation with Alumni Board President Nanci Isaacs '79, Chala Tyson Tshitundu '18, and Caroline Rodriguez '20.
  • The Emerson Prison Initiative: Education as social justice. A conversation moderated by Kim McLarin, EPI Faculty, with Mneesha Gellman, EPI Director, Cara Moyer-Duncan, EPI Program Coordinator and Jesse Soares, Former EPI Student.
  • Radical Archiving From A Black Feminist Lens: Lifting up Boston’s Black ancestral luminaries’ stories honoring the legacy of Ms. Elma Lewis '43. Elma Lewis Center Director Tamera Marko leads a conversation with the co-founding members of the Social Justice Archive Network, Priscilla Andrade, A.Z. Hackett and Coco Rosenberg; and the co-creator of the Elma Lewis Living Stories Archive, Helen Credle.

The Bright Lights Film Series presents CRUTCH

March 24-25
CRUTCH chronicles the gravity-defying life of Bill Shannon, an internationally renowned artist, breakdancer, and skate punk—on crutches. Featuring a discussion with directors Sacchi Cunningham and Chandler Evans, protagonist Bill Shannon, and Dance Umbrella co-founder Jeremy Alliger ‘75, who gave the film's subject his start in dance. SouJee '20 is a first generation Korean American who had several obstacles to overcome in order to go to college. With the help of scholarship aid and support from the Office of Student Success, she was able to complete her final year and graduate from Emerson.
