Sewanee Students Explore Singapore and Vietnam on the Dynamics of Asian Business Field Study Trip
Nine Sewanee students recently returned from a summer study-away experience led by Myles Elledge, director of the Babson Center for Global Commerce. Over three weeks, students in the Dynamics of Asian Business course immersed themselves in the Southeast Asia business ecosystem, diving deep into understanding the emerging “tiger economies” of Singapore and Vietnam. Students engaged in 16 business meetings in Singapore, Hanoi, and Saigon, meeting with government economic development leaders, start-up firms, business researchers, and leading technology, sustainable finance, and hospitality firms in each country. During the weekends, the group explored cultural, historical, and natural sites, with highlights including an executive tour of Singapore’s historic Raffles Hotel, a two-night cruise on Halong Bay, biking through Cat Ba National Park, and the hawking chaos of Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City.

Rising Junior Carey Fellows Focus on Career Skills During Summer School
Leading into their junior year, Carey Fellows attended summer school at Sewanee in preparation for work as full-time employees during the spring semester. They kicked off the start of the summer with a team-building trip down the Ocoee River. During the following weeks, they met as a cohort to focus on career building skills: identifying their talents and leadership style with CliftonStrengths assessment, building a stronger network on LinkedIn, practicing elevator pitches for compelling introductions, and refining resume and interview skills. When classes began in August, these business honors students confidently started the application process with the Babson Center’s partner companies—across the United States and around the world!

Sewanee DataLab 2024 Fellows Partner with BetterFi to Tackle Predatory Lending in Surrounding Counties
Myles Elledge worked with four Sewanee students as a consulting team advisor this summer on their project with BetterFi, a nonprofit enterprise and community development financial institution (CDFI). DataLab is a data science for social good eight-week training program where students learn to code and then apply their skills to develop data tools for social impact organizations. The team analyzed Tennessee population data and developed a dashboard and a methodology for ranking the most susceptible census tracts to predatory lenders. Their research will enable BetterFi to target and expand its service offerings—affordable installment loans and coaching to help individuals break free from debt traps with predatory lenders.
