Dear Valued Member,
We’re in the final quarter of the most difficult year for most businesses in decades. Many of us won’t be sorry to see 2020 end, given the once-in-a-century pandemic and associated economic losses the world has experienced. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, with substantial progress being made in vaccine development and with Next Gen ATMs ready to be launched in November.
I think 2021 will be a transitional year in which semi-normalcy and then normalcy will gradually return. It will be transitional, too, in that mass migrations will continue in our industry to W10 operating systems, the new XFS4IoT standard and the Next Gen ATM ecosystem with its integration of ATMs and the mobile platform, as investments in self-service increase across the world.
Our industry can be proud of how we dealt with this massive challenge in 2020. Not only did the ATM industry continue to provide cash access at the frontlines throughout the pandemic, but we signed off a new global ATM hygiene protocol for a more hygiene-conscious society and stayed on track to deliver the Next Gen ATM ecosystem before year end. I would like to thank you for all your efforts in keeping our industry as strong as possible under this huge duress and for keeping innovation going as we look ahead with great eagerness to life after the pandemic.

| Unique Attributes of Cash
| |
|
We begin our series on the unique attributes of cash with a value which most people in the world rate very highly – privacy. Whereas all electronic, online and card transactions are tracked, cash transactions are private. The cash doesn’t leave a data trail. This makes cash the most silent of payments. A cash transaction happens instantly between the buyer and seller without generating data on the individual which can then be sold on for third-party marketing purposes without that individual’s consent. A cash payment, being private, does not compromise the individual’s right to privacy of information about the transaction. The data generated by electronic transactions, by contrast, can be used and misused numerous times, compromising the individual’s right to privacy. Furthermore, in autocratic, non-democratic states, the data generated from electronic transactions can be used by oppressive governments to track the movements and behaviour of individual citizens, compromising their freedom. There is a growing danger in so-called surveillance societies that human freedom can be diminished to a point where human rights can easily become compromised. In short, cash is a bulwark against attacks on human privacy and freedom, whether from autocratic governments or from entities selling data about individuals, without consent, to the highest bidder. The privacy of cash protects individual human freedom.

ATMIA Issues Word of Caution on Media Reporting of a New Scientific Study on Coronavirus Survival Rates on Surfaces
ATMIA called out sensationalist media headlines reporting on a new scientific study by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness about how long the new coronavirus can survive on a variety of surfaces.
“The deliberate use of fear-mongering hyperbole in headlines like ‘Coronavirus May Stay for Weeks on Banknotes and Touchscreens’, such as has appeared in Bloomberg news, does a disservice to the CSIRO scientists trying to better understand how long the virus persists on surfaces,” commented Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA, President of the ATM Security Association and Chairperson of the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs.

How COVID-19 is transforming ATM strategies
Even before the coronavirus pandemic, financial institutions were working to align digital and physical touchpoints with the desires of customers. But in our new reality of both economic calamity and limited interpersonal contact, banks are facing a real-time, wholesale shift in distribution channels. The stakes of getting these accelerated changes right is more necessary and challenging than ever.
Consumers have no doubt embraced digital banking more during the pandemic, but they still use ATMs to get cash. Even millennials, with their digital-first reputation, have a strong affinity for cash. The ATM Industry Association reported that several factors, from lower incomes to reduced credit accessibility, encourage this cohort to use cash regularly.
