Dear Colleagues:
Ball State University’s award-winning independent student media continue to receive top national honors, accolades, and recognition. Most recently, The Ball State Daily News, Ball Bearings magazine, and McKinley Avenue Agency—our student-run media, communications, and advertising agency—combined to earn more than 36 national awards. Read more in this newsletter about these and other recent Ball State student media awards and honors announced in late October.
Just before learning about the Daily News’ latest round of awards, we celebrated the newspaper’s 100-year-anniversary with a dinner held during Homecoming Week last month. Our campus newspaper reached its century-mark milestone in the Spring. The organization earned additional national recognition in recent months when The Daily News was featured in the Washington Monthly article, “The (Student) Paper of Record: The Ball State Daily News has filled a local journalism gap,” written by Deborah Fallows.
Below are a few more stories that I hope you will enjoy and then share. Let your friends and colleagues know how “We Fly” at Ball State.

Ball State University Biology Professor Awarded $487,000 National Science Foundation Grant to Study Animal Embryo Development
Ball State University’s Dr. Jessica Ward, associate professor of Biology, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate how embryos of aquatic animal species learn about the world before hatching. The project will test multiple hypotheses of learning mechanisms to determine when learned behaviors are first expressed in embryos, and how and from whom embryos learn. The results will also provide insight into how animals perceive and transmit information among siblings in the nest prior to hatching. Read more in this Ball State University press release.

Webpage With Valuable Resources, Insights Established for Ball State’s First-Generation College Students
Among the thousands of freshmen coming to Ball State University each year are numerous first-generation college students (first-gens)—individuals who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. First-gens’ experiences, backgrounds, stresses, and challenges can be unlike those of their peers.
Ball State aims to support all of its students, including first-generation college students, with a network of resources. To make it easier for first-gens to find information and assistance on a variety of topics, Ball State developed an online resource page dedicated to them. Supporting first-generation college students is another example of Ball State’s commitment to inclusive excellence, infusing diversity, equity, and education quality into the University’s mission and operations.
