A Note from The Director

Over the past few years, VINSE has launched several new initiatives that have strengthened our research, immersive education, and STEM outreach mission, ranging from pilot funding, which encourages new research directions that benefit from our core facilities, to NanoGuides, our cohort of more than 30 graduate students who lead our nano-inspired STEM outreach activities. We’ll be celebrating our latest initiative, the VINSE Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) with a kick-off event to be held in conjunction with NanoDay! later this fall. We seek to broaden our IAP membership so please let me know about alumni and other colleagues in industry who may be interested in learning more about our program and joining our kick-off event. Finally, I am excited to share that VINSE was asked to contribute an item to the Vanderbilt sesquicentennial time capsule that was interred in the cornerstone of Kirkland Hall last month. The VINSE undergraduate Tech Crew lithographically patterned a silicon wafer with the VU Dare to Grow motto and Dmitry Kokytsh used the VINSE atomic force microscope to additionally inscribe a tiny image of Cornelius Vanderbilt, which is 10 times smaller than the diameter of human hair. I wonder what the future generation will think about our nano-handiwork when they see it 150 years from now!

Industry Affiliates Program (IAP)

VINSE is proud to announce we have launched Vanderbilt's first Industry Affiliates Program (IAP) designed to foster collaborative relations with industry in sectors related to nanoscience and engineering. The IAP program will advance workforce development, including opportunities for internships and jobs, and help shape new R&D directions. Help us spread the word about our IAP program and attract new industry members.

The VINSE cleanroom can now deposit up to three materials at once in a vacuum environment using electron beam evaporation and resistive thermal evaporation in the Angstrom Multimode and Resistive systems.
