BY MATT ANDERSON • MEHARRY SCHOOL OF APPLIED COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES • Meharry Medical College, Fisk University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) have received an NIH R25 award to engage diverse undergraduate and graduate students in meaningful biomedical informatics and biomedical data science summer research experiences.
The five-year, $679,000 award will be shared by Meharry, Fisk and VUMC and will fund the creation of the Biomedical Informatics Ecosystem to Support Talented Diverse Students in Data Science (BEST-DS2). BEST-DS2 will engage Fisk and Meharry students in a summer research program led by faculty from The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Fisk, Meharry’s School of Applied Computational Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Informatics at VUMC.
Over the course of five years, 30 students will gain knowledge, expertise and skills in the emerging fields of bioinformatics and biomedical data science that are critical to advancing health care.

Fortune Mhlanga, Ph.D., dean, Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences
“It is wonderful to join Fisk and VUMC to pursue our shared goal of increasing diversity in biomedical data science and bioinformatics,” said Fortune Mhlanga, Ph.D., dean, Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences. “BEST-DS2 will play an important role in preparing diverse students for future educational and career opportunities.”
Fisk and Meharry are Historically Black Colleges and Universities with a high proportion of students from groups who are underrepresented in biomedical informatics and biomedical data science. VUMC provides substantial expertise in successful summer research experiences through the Vanderbilt Biomedical Informatics Summer Program. Each institution is in Nashville, Tenn. and enjoys a history of successful collaborations.
This program also builds upon the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance which began in 1999 with a mission to enrich learning and advance clinical research by developing and supporting a mutually beneficial partnership with each other and the communities they serve.

Two School of Medicine educators receive Kaiser-Permanente teaching honors
Two educators in the School of Medicine were awarded most prestigious teaching honors through the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program. The honors, presented recently at the 2022 Daniel T. Rolfe Scholars Memorial Heritage Lecture, were awarded to Emmanuel Atta-Asafo-Adjei, Ph.D., professor, Division of Integrated Didactics, Department of Professional and Medical Education who received the Basic Sciences Award; and Michael Rhodes, M.D., clinical skills instructor, Division of Clinical Skills and Competencies, Department of Professional and Medical Education who received the Clinical Sciences Award.
This award was established through a grant from the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, which is an integral part of the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program. The grant supports two equal awards, one given to an outstanding teacher in pre-clinical subjects and the other to an outstanding teacher in clinical subjects. Students from all four School of Medicine classes nominate faculty based on certain admirable traits that are deemed important for these awards.

UT Chattanooga Honors College and Meharry HBCU Wellness Project continue collaboration
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Honors College continues its collaboration with the Meharry Medical College HBCU Wellness Project in broadening the experience of UTC students in, among other areas, research collection, public health practice and conference presentation.
Dr. Linda Frost, dean of the Honors College wanted to bring the opportunity to UTC students citing the strength of the wellness project’s instruction. The collaboration would also give students of color at UTC’s predominantly white campus the opportunity to work with other students of color around the state and at Meharry in particular.
The UTC/HBCU Wellness Project connection began in the 2020-21 academic year, continuing into this academic year where Dean Frost offered the opportunity to students interested in health care at the UTC campus. Five students have currently completed approved protocols and two faculty mentors are now working with UTC’s Student Health Ambassadors. Those ambassadors have worked on projects such as dental health care promotion, COVID vaccination hesitancy in marginalized Chattanooga communities and risk factors for diabetes in Native American women.
