Hi All,
Wow, it really heated up this week in Wisconsin! May is Mental Health Awareness Month. May 3-9 is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week so I wanted to share some information with you.
The past year, discussions about mental health issues entered the realm of public discussion, breaking stigmas, as celebrities and politicians took to the internet to speak about their experiences and struggles—many of which have come to light due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mental health issues can be extraordinarily isolating, and even as we fight against the stigma of speaking up on these issues, lack of public education can make it difficult for families to find the help they need for their children.
Child and adolescent psychiatrists play a crucial role in society, tending to the mental health of youth, supporting communities in times of disaster, responding to traumatic events, and so much more. All of this helps keep our communities happy, healthy, and safe, and AACAP is proud to represent the child & adolescent psychiatry community.
I hope you have a great week.

LGBTQIA+ Learning Opportunity for 4-H Volunteers
Did you know that LGBTQ youth are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, but rather placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society? Imagine feeling confused, isolated and not accepted for who you are and who you know you are supposed to be. Now more than ever, it is critical that we support and ally for our LGBTQIA+ youth in 4-H. Show them that they are not alone in their struggle for equality, inclusion, and acceptance.
Join the MSU Extension and 4-H LGBTQIA+ Advocacy Team’s presentation by Owen Bondono, 2021 Michigan Teacher of the Year. Owen (pronouns: he/they), teaches 9th grade English at Oak Park High School (MI). He identifies as transgender and bisexual. Owen will share his own story as someone who is queer and has experience in the way schools and youth groups can be unwelcoming from multiple facets. He will discuss the kinds of environments current LGBTQIA+ teens are facing and how this adversely affects their mental and physical health. Owen will also discuss strategies that can be used with young people to make them feel supported.
4-H’ers deserve a welcoming, loving world and you can be a part of making that happen. Join us for this virtual (Zoom) presentation on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, from 7:30 – 8:45 p.m. ET. Zoom link and password will be sent out prior to the event via email.
Registration for LGBTQIA+ Learning Opportunity for 4-H Volunteers is open. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on May 23, 2022.
