Tutorium students and staff enjoyed a Games Day. The event helped support language development and cultural learning in a fun, interactive environment. Through a variety of new games, students practiced communication skills, expanded their vocabulary, and built confidence using English with their peers and teachers. The event encouraged collaboration, cultural exchange, and meaningful conversations. It was wonderful to see engagement, laughter, and authentic language use throughout the event.

Summer Semester is more than half over! We hope you are enjoying your studies at the Tutorium. Time is passing quickly, and everyone should start thinking about what to do next session. If you are planning to continue here at the Tutorium, you must register for the Fall Semester soon. You should receive an email with instructions on how to register. Search for “Time to register for Fall courses” in your UIC email. If you try to register and receive a HOLD message, be sure to contact tutorium@uic.edu.

Fall Session begins Monday, August 24, and ends Friday, December 4.

We want your photos!! At the end of every term, we make a short video celebrating the completion of another semester, and we include all of the pictures our students share with us. We especially love photos of you and your classmates in class, exploring Chicago, at class parties, and having fun with your teachers.

Please send us any photos that you took this semester for us to share in the Tutorium End-of-Session video.

Final Exam Week is next week! You've got this!

Are you studying with us next semester? Did you know that as a Tutorium student, you can audit courses with no fee? However, to do this, you must first do two things. 

Remember, the time frame for getting permission and signing up is short and is at the beginning of each semester. You should make your plans and be ready to work on the paperwork as soon as class starts in August.

You can find the form, along with more info on auditing, here. You would register as a non-degree undergraduate student. Paperwork must be completed before the last day of late registration and must be done on the first day of instruction. 

Recruiting ESL Students from China, Taiwan, India, South Korea, and Spanish-speaking countries. You are invited to take part in a research study about learning English grammar! This five-part study is online and remote. All you need is internet access and a computer. Participants will receive $20 upon completion of the study.

Chicago is a beautiful city. It's not because it has the Lake, or the architecture is fascinating. It's because there are so many interesting and exciting places and pieces of culture to learn and explore. As you settle in here, you may wonder which parts to see, which places to avoid, and what to do first. But most importantly, just like the textbooks and materials you use in your classes, Chicago is a source of English and experience. The following section of the newsletter is written by one of our advisors here at the Tutorium. Our advisors are here to help answer questions and steer you toward the right path for you.

Are you applying to UIC for an undergraduate or graduate degree program?  Did you know that the Tutorium has an English test that you can use instead of TOEFL or IELTS scores for proof of your language skills? This test is called the ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment). Testing Services | The Tutorium has more information.

To take the ELPA, current Tutorium Intensive English Program students must be either in level 5 Reading/Writing (R/W) and Listening/Speaking (L/S) courses or have taken level 4 R/W and level 4 L/S courses and passed either the R/W or L/S course.  

IEP students who have successfully completed level 5 should contact the TIE office to waive out of the ELPA and receive a letter of sufficient English for admission to UIC.

Every semester, the Tutorium does research to improve our program. We get information from teachers and students. To collect this information from students, we use online surveys near the end of the semester. 

Next week, you will complete a Tutorium Course evaluation and a Student Services evaluation. Your teacher will tell you when. These evaluations are online, and you can complete them on your computer or your phone.

These evaluations will ask you about your learning experience. Because these evaluations are online, you can change your answers only before you click the "Done" button. You can also write comments, and we encourage you to do so. 

After the semester is over and we have sent you your grades, our director and your teachers will look at the evaluations, and the Curriculum Committee will also study the information for the whole program. Thank you for your help.
