Marie's Message

Hi All,

It was great to see pictures of so many of you and your clubs celebrating National 4-H week. It was also wonderful to celebrate 4-H at the National 4-H Dairy Conference at the Crave farm. The Portland Boosters 4-H Club did a great job serving food to all of the hungry 4-Hers at the Dairy Conference.

Next week is the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals Conference in Madison. I will be there all week, teaching a couple sessions and completing my National Board term. In addition, there will be 3 youth from Dodge County 4-H sharing their talents, two 4-H families sharing their products in the vendor marketplace, and a soon-to-be 4-H graduate delivering a special capnote presentation.

Zachery Behling (Neosho Utopians) will be at the conference on Thursday morning, to share his music with the crowd as a vocalist.

Bethany and Jonathan Torkelson (Watertown Badgers) will be entertaining the crowd on piano during the evening awards program.

Beth Crave (Portland Boosters) and Shelly Grosenick (Lebanon Luckies) and their families will be selling products at the Wisconsin 4-H Marketplace. We are expecting over 1,000 4-H colleagues joining us from around the country for the conference.

Finally, Cameron Pokorny (Achievers) will be part of the capnote presentation for the conference. He is on a panel of national youth representatives who speak to the impact of 4-H programs and, especially, the impact of 4-H professionals on youth. It will be exciting to see Cameron as one of the four young people across the United States speaking about the impact of 4-H.

This is an exciting time for these families and a wonderful opportunity to represent Dodge County 4-H on the national stage.

Remember to check out dates at the end of the Friday Focus. We are also working on the yearly calendar for 2023 as soon as we have the dates from the charter documents for county project meetings and programs.

Hats Off...

...to Portland Boosters 4-H Club for hosting the dinner for the National 4-H Dairy Conference.

Leipsic (Owen Hemling) Officers were elected for the 2022-2023 4-H year. A motion was made to have Roadside Clean-up and Cemetery Clean-up at 8:30 on 9/24.

Achievers (Campbell Panetti) Achievement in November has been narrowed down to potluck or pizza. The officers met in September to figure out the club’s yearlong calendar of events.

Wisconsin 4-H Charter Application Now Available for Clubs & Groups

The 4-H charter application will be completed online this fall and is due November 1st. Remember, a 4-H charter indicates the club or group is organized in accordance with the objectives of the 4-H program. It authorizes the club or group to use the 4-H emblem for educational purposes in accordance with laws and regulations established by Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the 4-H Charter is education, communication, and accountability.

4-H Leaders Celebrate Milestone Anniversaries

Dodge County 4-H Youth Development and the Dodge County 4-H Leaders Association recognizes the volunteer leaders (for their 5, 10, 15, etc. year anniversaries) who share their time and talents to make Dodge County 4-H such a successful program.

Anniversary pins are available upon request for eligible leaders who are celebrating a milestone anniversary. Pins are sponsored by the Dodge County 4-H Leaders Association. Request your pin ONLINE HERE or email tmalterer@co.dodge.wi.us by Friday, October 14, 2022.

Dodge County 4-H is Seeking More Amazing Volunteers!

Volunteers help make 4-H possible! To volunteer, you don’t need to have previous experience working with youth. The most important qualifications are:

a desire to work with young people to help them learn new things and gain life skills; and
wanting to provide youth with positive experiences in a safe and welcoming environment

One of the first steps to become a registered 4-H volunteer is to attend a new volunteer orientation, Volunteers in Training (VIP). The next virtual options (Zoom) are:

American Spirit East – June 2-11, June 9-18 or June 16-25, 2023

What is American Spirit East?
All youth grades 8-10 have the opportunity to experience history & heritage by immersing in a 10-day bus journey to the East Coast — Youth-led content throughout the experience — Increase knowledge of American history while experiencing where it occurred — Dynamic exposure to diverse cultural experiences and perspectives of the foundation of our nation.

The Program has the Following Objectives for its Participants:
-Increase knowledge and understanding of America’s heritage
-Build awareness of the many steps taken to gain U.S. independence and freedom
-Further develop skills in leadership and personal expression of values
-Increase awareness of self in relationship to others
-Share what was learned with others in your club and county

Space Camp – April 20-24, 2023

Registration opens November 1 – December 1 in 4HOnline

What is Space Camp?
Wisconsin 4-H Space Camp is an educational experience where youth, in 6th-8th grade, from across the state take a bus down to Huntsville, Alabama, for a 4 day journey. Youth get the opportunity to venture away from home to meet new friends, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and learn all about space. A team of trained Adult Advisors and Space Camp counselors leads them.

Space Camp is just what you think it is – it’s a camp experience where you learn and experience a ton of different aspects about life as an astronaut, working at NASA, and exploring places beyond Earth! Wisconsin 4-H Space Camp participants experience the Pathfinder Program. The Pathfinder Program is a 3 day experience where youth participate in a variety of simulated space activities. 4-H Clubs Invited to Create New Cedar Crest Ice Cream Flavor!

Who: All 4-H Clubs in the State of Wisconsin are eligible.
What: Wisconsin 4-H clubs are invited to collaborate to imagine a delicious new ice cream flavor, and come up with an interesting flavor name. Each club may submit up to five entries.
When: Entries must be submitted to Cedar Crest Ice Cream no later than November 15, 2022 via online entry form or email.
