President's Day of Service

The President’s Day of Service originally named “Freshman Involved Day,” was first organized by the Center for Social Concern in 1997. It began as an orientation event—encouraging first year students to come together, make connections, and learn about our Baltimore community.
Nearly a decade ago, President Ron Daniels joined Hopkins and made a long-lasting commitment to serve our Johns Hopkins and Baltimore communities. Since then, Freshmen Involved Day was renamed "President’s Day of Service”. Entering into its 10th year, the President’s Day of Service invites students, staff, faculty, and alumni from the entire Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus to serve alongside various community organizations, local nonprofits, and government agencies throughout Baltimore City.
This year’s annual event will be held on Saturday, October 13th and is made possible through the generous support of the Hopkins Parents Fund. There will be a post-event reflection reception co-facilitated by student team leaders, community partners, and select Hopkins HSA staff. Participants will be encouraged to think critically about the importance of service, their place in Baltimore as a Hopkins affiliate, and how they can continue their community engagement throughout the course of their time at Hopkins.

Disability Awareness Month

October is Disability Awareness Month and Advocates for Disability Awareness (ADA), one of our Homewood student groups, invites members of our community to embrace change and give voice to individuals, who are sometimes marginalized through a series of events (all of which are free of charge). The students’ look forward to providing educational opportunities about disability rights, celebrating the incredible accomplishments of reformers, and establishing opportunities for creating a more inclusive environment on campus. Events include:
  • October 2-Pre-Med Panel in Gilman 50 at 6PM, in which Pre-Med students with disabilities will talk about their experiences both as patients and as students heading into the medical field.
  • October 16-Ice Cream Social in the Great Hall at 6PM.
  • October 29-To cap off the month, invited educator and nationally known women’s empowerment speaker Christina Irene, will present on dispelling implicit and explicit bias. She is a long-time advocate for people with disabilities. She will present on stigma in relation to invisible disabilities. Disability Awareness Month ushers in opportunities to enhance the student experience here at Hopkins. This culminating event will be held at 7PM in Charles Commons Salon A.

VP for Security Seeks Input from Students, Families

Johns Hopkins’ Vice President for Security Melissa Hyatt is establishing new channels of communication to ensure the Johns Hopkins security operation is accessible and responsive. "The focus on safety at Johns Hopkins must be an inclusive partnership," she said in an email to students Sept. 20 "and I look forward to building strong relationships throughout our community."
Hyatt is actively seeking feedback from students on all campuses by creating a new Student Advisory Committee for Security. In her message to students, she said the committee will focus on strengthening current security operations and address a variety of subjects related to safety and security—including recruitment and training of security personnel, security-related communications and reports, and safety policies.

Celebrating LGBTQ with National Coming Out Day Breakfast

LGBTQ Life at JHU is busy with preparations to celebrate National Coming Out Day, a day dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer awareness. On Thursday, October 11, LGBTQ Life will host a National Coming Out Day breakfast to recognize members and allies of the LGBTQ community at Johns Hopkins.
National Coming Out Day falls on October 11 to commemorate the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987, in which hundreds of thousands of people marched in the nation’s capital to bring attention to the AIDS crisis and call for equitable treatment of LGBTQ people.
LGBTQ Life’s breakfast is open to anyone who wishes to honor that historic march and celebrate the Johns Hopkins LGBTQ community. The breakfast is an opportunity to build connections between our LGBTQ and allied Blue Jays over bagels and coffee and raise the visibility of the community at Johns Hopkins.
In addition to the breakfast, LGBTQ Life hosts a number of events throughout the semester that are open to the LGBTQ and allied community. These include Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honor those in the transgender community who have been murdered in transphobic attacks and raise wareness about continued violence against transgender people, approaches in November. December 1 marks World AIDS Day, a day to mourn those who have died as a result of the AIDS pandemic. In spring, we will celebrate all that our students have accomplished through our annual Lavender Celebration.
For more information about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Life, visit our website or encourage your Jay to send us an email!
