Welcome to the first issue of E-Viewpoints in 2019! I hope you enjoy this informative issue full of our latest efforts to improve and enhance the human condition. I am proud that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are being recognized for their achievements and look forward to seeing our Red Raider family grow.
From the well-attended Homecoming Parade celebration to Personal Financial Planning winning three national student competitions, to a faculty member being named to Texas Tech’s Integrated Scholars, to the highly anticipated Skyviews Dinner Series; there is much to celebrate in the start of 2019.

Mitzi Lauderdale Awarded Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching Award
As one of the highest honors given by Texas Tech University to faculty members, the Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards are given to individuals who exemplify teaching or research in their role. Associate Dean of Students and Associate Professor of Personal Financial Planning, Mitzi Lauderdale, J.D., CFP® was selected as a recipient of the 2018-2019 Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching Award.

DOD Graduate Study Tour
Dallas Study Tour Provides Industry Knowledge to Graduate Design Students

Graduate students in the Department of Design (DOD) recently attended a study tour in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 11 and 12, accompanied by DOD faculty members. Students in the Acute Care Design and Designing for Special Populations courses were able to tour top design showrooms and network with design professionals and Texas Tech University Interior Design (ID) alumni.

Triple Crown Triumph: Personal Financial Planning Claims Victory in National Student Competitions

Three undergraduate student teams in the Department of Personal Financial Planning (PFP) each earned first place in nationally acclaimed conference competitions over the course of the fall semester. Students successfully competed in the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education® (AFCPE®) Knowledge Bowl, Financial Planning Challenge, and in the Arthur N. Caple (ANC) Retirement Knowledge Quiz Bowl.

Department of Design and Hospitality and Retail Management Class Collaborations at Skyviews Restuarant 

Undergraduate students in the Restaurant, Hotel, & Institutional Management (RHIM) and Interior Design (ID) collaboration course presented their poster presentations at Skyviews Restaurant. Students worked together in roles as either the client or designers to present to the public their fully functional and modern designs, each with ADA compliant features.

Senior Victoria Patton's time as FCCLA advisor is enriching her degree experience through service and leadership opportunities in the College of Human Sciences. The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) advisor and Family and Consumer Sciences(FCS) senior Victoria Patton recently led a group of high school students in FCCLA on a tour of the College of Human Sciences (COHS).

Personal Financial Planning major Jacob Gurock has been selected as the College of Human Sciences Banner Bearer for the Fall 2018 commencement. The West Windsor, New Jersey native feels humbled to become part of such an esteemed selection of students and promises to uphold the standards of this honor through both his career and relationships.

Three students in the College of Human Sciences have been awarded the Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship and Fellowship. The Louise Willson Arnold Scholarship and Fellowship is awarded to three outstanding College of Human Sciences students each year.

Nutrition Alumna Impacts Thousands Through  TTUHSC Employee Health and Wellness Programs

Nutritional Sciences alumna Allison Kerin is dedicated to informing the public on nutrition, health and wellness. Allison graduated from Texas Tech University in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition, followed by a master's degree in Food and Nutrition in 2004.

Wine Marketing Graduate Student Project
Experiential Learning Takes a Sweet Turn in Wine Marketing Project

Associate Professor Natalia Velikova, Ph.D. tasked her RHIM 5345 graduate course with designing a wine marketing plan for real wineries in Texas. In the Wine Marketing and Tourism course, students are divided into 5 different groups: distribution, tasting room, social media/website, packaging, and wine events/wine club. Each group evaluates the current winery situation in their respective area and develops a plan for improvement.
Family and Consumer Sciences alumna Katie Sierega
First Year Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Lands 3 Grants for Classroom Success

In May of 2017, Katie Sierega not only received a bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and a minor in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), but was also named Outstanding Senior of the Year in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FSCE) program.
Two months later, Katie began teaching at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado.
