Upcoming Discussion: Green Gentrification and Health
RCE Member Na'Taki Osborne Jelks co-authored, with Viniece Jennings and Alessandro Rigolon, the article Green Gentrification and Health: A Scoping Review which was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The abstract explains, "urban greening initiatives are often linked to enhanced human health and wellbeing, but they can also be a driver of gentrification". This review examines existing research on the health effects of greening initiatives in gentrifying neighborhoods and states that longtime marginalized residents are negatively impacted by green gentrification "as they experience a lower sense of community, feel that they do not belong in green space, and, in many studies, use green space less often than newcomers".
The piece sparked discussion within the RCE Google Group, and the RCE Business Engagement Action Group is planning a virtual discussion of the article for all RCE members.
The virtual discussion will take place on February 17th, at 1:00pm. Meeting link coming soon - watch the Google Group.

HELC Research Seminar: Alexander von Humboldt’s ProtoEcological Thinking
Join in on February 26th, 12:00pm -1:15pm to participate in HELC's upcoming research seminar (click here for a link to the webinar). In this virtual event, Caroline Schaumann, Professor of German Studies at Emory University will discuss her research regarding Alexander von Humboldt.
Abstract:
Alexander von Humboldt was one of the most important scientific
and humanist thinkers of the nineteenth century, with foresights that resonate in many current environmental debates. In accordance with his understanding of nature as spatial, dynamic, and fluid, Humboldt did not limit himself to one single subject matter but worked in fields labeled today as geology, geography, meteorology, biology, physiology, and anthropology. Rather than describing the physical world around him as static, Humboldt
focused on processes and interrelations, studying both the distribution of matter and organisms and their interactions, and looking for bridges and connections that have by now become a defining centerpiece of any ecological inquiry.
