Joel 2:28-29
And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

New International Version (NIV)
Talking with  a dear friend from California yesterday, I was reminded that we all have natural disasters.  Earthquakes, fires, hurricanes, tsunamis, blizzards, and tornadoes plague our planet.  Depending upon where we live, we are free from some but not the others.

The ancient world of Palestine feared the plague of locusts.  They darkened the sky as they descended on the fields of grain.  Like a Baptist pot luck dinner, there was nothing left after the line of locusts had its fill.  In an agrarian cultured that depended on a crop each year to live, locusts not only stole their livelihood but life itself.  Children starved without food.

After Joel pronounced the judgment of locusts on the sin of his people, he envisioned a day when God would restore what the locusts had eaten (2:25).  On the day of the Lord, God would not only give food but he would give himself.  God would pour his own Spirit on all people.  Sons and daughters would preach, old men would dream dreams as young men saw visions.  When will this be?  At Pentecost Peter said, “It starts now.”  On that day men and women proclaimed the wonders of God aloud.  We still are!  In Jesus’ name we proclaim new life to a world that has lost its hope.  Who will listen, and live?

Pray with me:  Father, today we remember the great losses of our lives.  Some days, many days, our lives resemble the rhyme, “All the kings horses and all the kings men. . . .” could not put things together again.  When all of life caves in, what then?  We wonder if you are there.  We wonder if you care.  But you say that you will restore all that has been lost.  We believe what you say.  We believe that you are there and that you do care, and we thank you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
