"Finch Honored by U.S. Conference of Mayors"– Connecticut Post
Jeffrey Bean from the U.S. Conference of Mayors presents Mayor Bill Finch with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Partner America 2014 “Small Business Advocate Award” for his efforts and support of small business in the city. Mayor Finch is joined by Deborah Caviness from the Mayor’s Office of Small and Minority Business.
The conference rooms of Margaret E. Morton Government Center were filled with small business owners and entrepreneurs on Tuesday, as the U.S. Conference of Mayors and PartnerAmerica presented Mayor Bill Finch with the “Small Business Advocate” award for his efforts and support of small business in the city.
“Mayors across the country are investing in the future by helping small businesses to grow and create jobs,” said Tom Cochran, director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.  “Mayor Finch is a leader in this arena, and his tireless work to expand job opportunities and revitalize the Park City through small business development are to be applauded.”
This recognition ceremony was a part of a Small Business Day event hosted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the City of Bridgeport.
“In Bridgeport, we know that small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” said Mayor Finch. “That’s why we’re working hard to develop a business environment where small businesses can grow and thrive. And, we’re succeeding. In Eco-Technology Park we’ve helped small businesses create hundreds of green jobs and millions of dollars in annual income. We also have a growing amount of young entrepreneurs who are creating small businesses across our city, including in our revitalized downtown area. Because of this small business boon, we’re attracting large companies, too. This will help create even more jobs as Bridgeport continues getting better every single day. So thank you for this award, but it’s really the small businesses across our city who deserve your applause.”
"Klee heralds Bridgeport’s ‘green’ efforts" – Bridgeport News
Mayor Bill Finch, DEEP Commissioner Robert Klee, State Representative Terry Backer (Stratford), Governor Dannel P. Malloy, DECD Commissioner Catherine Smith, and State Senator Andres Ayala pose for a photo following a press conference held at Seaside Park last month.
In addressing the Bridgeport Regional Business Council (BRBC) on Sept. 24, Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Commissioner Robert Klee heralded efforts in Bridgeport to create green jobs, produce clean energy and revitalize run-down properties. He also promoted moves in the city to further develop and use cleaner modes of transportation.
“Bridgeport is setting the pace and demonstrating how a focus on energy and environmental issues can create jobs, produce clean energy, and revitalize run-down properties,” Klee said.
Klee also praised Green Energy Park, an effort in Bridgeport, championed by Finch, to put 9,000 solar panels and a 2.8Mw fuel cell on an old and unused landfill.
“A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of attending the launch of a solar array on a closed landfill in Hartford,” Klee said. “I’m hoping that I’ll have the pleasure of witnessing another landfill conversion in Connecticut soon. Green Energy Park in Bridgeport can create nearly one-hundred jobs. It can power up to 5,000 homes with virtually pollutant free energy, which will help our kids breathe easier. And, it will bring millions of dollars in tax revenue to the city.”
“Mayor Finch, you are clearly focused on building a better future for your city and its residents,” Klee said.
Bridgeport has also received support from Malloy at the state level, according to Klee, specifically in revitalizing run down properties, developing cleaner energy, and helping the city move toward greener modes of transportation.

Though it's only a fraction of the money needed to completely restore the tornado-ravaged Barnum Museum to its former glory, museum Executive Director Kathleen Maher cheered the approval of $183,510 in state grant funds to begin improvements to the historic building.
The money, which comes from the Department of Economic and Community Development and the State Historic Preservation Office, will go to restoring the museum's east wall. The wall was badly damaged by a June 2010 tornado that whipped through the city, devastating many downtown buildings.
"It was amazing that the wall didn't collapse," Maher said Thursday, adding that bricks were hanging out of the structure following the storm. The wall is now held up with scaffolding.
City of Bridgeport spokesman Brett Broesder called the approval of the grant "great news."
"There is still more work to be done at the site, but these state funds -- coupled with the city's investment -- will get the ball rolling on fixing structural issues with this historic building," he said.

"Bridgeport’s Green Efforts Celebrated at Awards Ceremony" - CT Post (Blog)

As Bridgeport continues to serve as a leader in green job creation, construction, and clean energy production, these efforts were recognized at this year’s Connecticut Green Building Council Green Building Awards. The first award – the Alexion Award of Excellence – was given for Mayor Finch’s BGreen2020 initiative, which pushes Bridgeport to be one of the greenest cities in America by 2020.
The second award – the Institutional Award of Honor – was given for the new Fairchild Wheeler High School, which the Hartford Courant and CBS News referenced as the greenest schools in the state.
