Pre-Law Center Receives $50,000 Gift
Dave Koschik '79
Miami University’s Sue J. Henry Center for Pre-Law Education is pleased to announce a significant $50,000 donation from the law firm White & Case, LLP in honor of alumnus Dave Koschik ’79.
This generous gift has allowed for the creation of the David N. Koschik Pre-Law Education Fund. This endowed fund will perpetually support the Center’s mission to provide pre-law students with the resources and guidance they need to succeed in law school and beyond.
“We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift in recognition of Dave’s lifetime of achievement and continuing support of Miami’s pre-law students,” said Elizabeth Zimmerman, Director. “This donation will have a lasting impact on our students, enabling us to enhance program offerings and events, and expand resources helping Miami’s pre-law students succeed in law school and beyond.”
Dave Koschik, a 1979 Miami graduate with a B.A. in Political Science and Russian, has had a distinguished career in law. After earning his JD/MSFS degrees from Georgetown University, he joined White & Case LLP, a global law firm. Dave retired from White & Case as a partner in December 2023. Koschik was a founding member of Miami’s Pre-Law Alumni Advisory Board, and also chaired that Board for several years before becoming a director and eventually chair of the Miami University Foundation Board. “When White & Case informed me at the time of my retirement that they would like to make a contribution in my honor,” Koschik said, “I was delighted to ask them to direct that contribution to the Miami University Foundation for the benefit of the Pre-Law Center. It seemed only fitting that a donation by my firm to honor my legal career would be used to support future lawyers for years to come.”
The Sue J. Henry Center for Pre-Law Education provides a wide range of services to Miami University students, including individualized advising, networking and pre-law exploration events, classes, and workshops on legal careers. The Center also offers scholarships to help students defray the costs of LSAT preparation.
Greetings from the Pre-Law Alumni Advisory Board Chair

Fellow Miamians,
As you may be aware, The Sue J. Henry Center for Pre-Law Education has become a tremendous resource for students and recent alumni considering law school. The Center continues to thrive, thanks in large part to your generous support and guidance. This past year has been one of significant achievements, and we're excited to share these latest updates.
A Year of Success
  • Individualized Advising Excellence: Our dedicated team of advisors provided tailored guidance to seniors and alumni, resulting in an impressive 92% law school acceptance rate for Miami seniors in 2023. This significantly outperforms the national average of 80%.
  • National Speakers: The Pre-Law Center hosted two national speakers on campus, nationally recognized appellate advocate, Carter Phillips, Esq., Partner at Sidley Austin and Rob Bilott, Esq., environmental law partner at Taft Law and the subject of the movie Dark Waters.
  • Engaging with Legal Professionals: We fostered invaluable connections between students and alumni through a variety of events:
Networking Roundtable: This annual event brought together 20 accomplished legal alumni from local and national law firms, companies and government to engage with pre-law students from all parts of the university.
Law Day: Nearly 70 law schools from across the country participated in our annual Law Day event, providing students with a wealth of information.
Beyond the Classroom
Your support has enabled us to offer unique opportunities that empower students to make informed decisions about their legal education:
  • Winter Term Shadowing: Students gained firsthand experience in various legal settings through
shadowing opportunities. Join in this January. Contact Brandon Prew for details.
  • Legal Experiences: Students gained experiences in diverse legal hubs like Washington D.C., London, and beyond, broadening students' horizons.
Your Impact
Your generosity in sharing your time, expertise, and resources has made a profound impact on our students. By providing mentorship, guidance, and real-world insights, you have helped shape the next generation of legal minds. We also welcome and encourage anyone who would like to become involved in the support of the Center. Please contact Elizabeth Zimmerman, Director at zimmerew@MiamiOH.edu.
We are incredibly grateful for your continued support. Together, we are empowering our students to achieve their full potential.

  • Pre Law Fellow, Steptoe LLP Chicago, IL
  • Majors: Diplomacy & Global Politics and Comparative Religion
While working at Steptoe, I've had the opportunity to explore all sorts of practice groups and areas of law. I've also gotten to work on trials and see what it's actually like being in the courtroom with your team and clients you represent. My favorite part has been seeing the strategy play out and the wonderful mentors I've come across. I've also really appreciated getting the chance to sharpen skills such as cite-checking, and familiarity with legal research platforms, which I know will give me a boost in law school!
Miami really helped me prepare for this position in developing the research skills that has allowed me to be an asset to my team. Additionally, the Pre-Law Center has been instrumental in guiding me through the application process for law school. There are so many requirements and timelines that details can easily get lost, (especially when juggling work and the LSAT!) Because of the Center's resources and class, I was well-prepared going in, and knew I had a helping hand I could always reach out to when needed.

    Get Involved
There are many ways for Miami alums to give back to current students. Here are a few examples:
    • Host a current Miami pre-law student at your firm or organization. The experience of seeing lawyers at work is a valuable part of a student’s decision to join the profession. You can host a student for a day or a few weeks during the semester break.
    • Connect with young lawyers and law students on the LinkedIn Miami University Lawyers Group - these young professionals need your expertise the most at the beginning of their careers. You can share information about your firm and your legal career, or offer to chat over coffee or Zoom if you share a field of interest.
    • Post a job on Miami’s Handshake. Many law firms hire non-lawyers as project managers, paralegals, office administrators, conflicts analysts and beyond. Handshake allows you to specifically attract Miami students and alumni. Law schools report that students who take a gap year or two to work in legal settings come to law school better prepared for the profession.
Of course, we cannot fulfill our mission without your support. If you would like to talk about how you might add resources and talents to pre-law education, please contact Chris Nelson, Senior Director of Development for the College of Arts and Science: chris.nelson@MiamiOH.edu.
