Health Education Highlight: Successful Living Series
The Quincy Y’s Successful Living Series Provides Community Support and Educational Opportunities
At the Y, we strive to provide an inclusive environment where all our members and participants are equally a part of our community, and to ensure our facilities, programs and services meet the needs of everyone who comes through our doors.
This January, the Y’s Quincy Branch launched its brand new Successful Living Series, a free seminar series open to the community, designed to improve education and quality of life among people with chronic physical disabilities. On Thursday, March 23rd, the second installment of the series took place, which featured an educational presentation on Job and School Resources led by Boston Center for Independent Living’s Manel DesVallons and Steven Higgins.
Don’t miss the next Successful Living Series seminar today, Thursday, March 9th at 3:00PM, where the topic of Insurance will be explored by The Advocator Group’s Courtney Scott.
For more information about the Successful Living Series, contact Sheryl Rosa at srosa@ssymca.org or 617-479-8500 ext. 4762.

On Thursday evenings, the basketball courts at the Quincy YMCA are lively with individuals of all ages and abilities participating in some fun, friendly competition in the popular wheelchair basketball program. Next time you’re in the branch on a Thursday night, stop by the basketball courts to see the fun in action!
From Y Member to Volunteer – And Much More!
The Y is many things to many people – a place to exercise, have family time, participate in sports, and more – but at the foundation of it all, the Y is a place for everyone. For Max Boehme, a longtime member of the Y’s Emilson Branch, the Y is a place to work out, have fun and volunteer. Two days a week, Max dedicates his time assisting in a variety of capacities both at the branch and Laura’s Center for the Arts.
Recently, Max shared the positive impact the Y has had on his health and well-being for a video project spearheaded by the Arc of Greater Plymouth. The video seeks to generate discussion regarding health and medical care for those with disabilities. "Max just loves working out and is truly inspirational," stated Emily Colson, Max’s mother.
Every day, we at the South Shore YMCA work to provide an inclusive environment where all members are equally a part of our community, and we make it a priority to provide facilities, programs and services that are accessible to all. As our association grows, we are continually expanding our inclusive programming to better serve our members with diverse abilities.
New and Returning Players Join Forces for a New Season of Hoopstars

With practices underway at each branch, players are gaining crucial game skills while learning the value of teamwork – all in preparation for an end of season tournament against other local, unified teams.
It’s not too late to join in the fun! If you love the game of basketball, don’t miss your chance to join other individuals with and without disabilities for a season of skill development, friendly competition and teamwork.

Volunteers From Archway Enterprises Support Arts & Education Programming at Laura's Center for the Arts
Over the past few months, Emilson’s Arts & Education Department has had the pleasure of partnering with Archway Enterprises, the branch of the Arc of Greater Plymouth, to welcome a team of extraordinary women who have spent their Tuesday mornings volunteering at Laura’s Center for the Arts.  Every week a different project attacked and completed with precision and pride which directly supports Arts & Education programming.  We are thankful to have Jessica, Tara, Katie, and Eleace with us each week; always ready to dig in with a smile and great cheer.  Led by a loving and supportive team leader, we are thankful to Shaelagh Walsh for her diligence and support in creating these moments with us to support our community in the arts.  Brava to these superb ladies!
