“Is there a purpose? Does God know what He is doing?”
“Is there a purpose? Does God know what He is doing?”

John 6:6
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
New International Version (NIV)
If we always knew what God knows, we would always want what God wants.  Do you agree?  As we look at the world and our lives we may sometimes wonder, “Is there a purpose?  Does God know what He is doing?”
When Jesus invited his disciples to feed the multitudes, he knew they would not quite understand.  The math didn’t work.  A few fish and loaves won’t feed thousands.  But John winks at the readers when he explains, “Jesus already knew what he was going to do.”  Our God is intentional.  Not only is he always working as we saw yesterday.  He is always working out his purpose.  Paul told the church in Rome: “God is working all things together for good . . .”
Our problem with God’s work lies in our inability to see everything that God is doing.  I have a point of view.  You have a point of view.  God has view!  He sees it all.  My pastor and mentor Larry Nixon, who endured considerable physical pain with his heart used to say,

“When God wants to drill a man
And thrill a man
And skill a man
When God wants to mold a man
To play the noblest part
When He yearns with all his heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world’s amazed,
Watch his methods, watch his ways
How God hammers him and hurts him
And with mighty blows converts him
Into trial shapes of clay that only God understands
As his tortured heart is crying and he lifts beseeching hands
How God bends but never breaks
When His good He undertakes
How God uses whom he chooses
And with every act induces him to try His glory out . . .
God knows what He is about.

God knows.  Not one pain in our lives is ever wasted in the hands of our omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God.  And if we knew what God knows, we would want what God wants.  Believe it!
Pray with me:
Father, we confess today our limited knowledge.  Though we are educated beyond our level of obedience, we sometimes wander in darkness because we do not understand.  Thank you for your omniscience today.  Though we pretend, you actually know it all.  Reveal what you want us to know.  Help us to will what you will today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
