Jeremiah 18:3-6
So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel.  But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.  Then the word of the Lord came to me.  He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.
New International Version (NIV)
My family makes good bears.  Out of clay!  At a young age, I remember seeing my Uncle Lloyd’s pottery bear, glazed in the kiln and painted.  It looked like something you would buy in a store.

On the other hand, my own experience with clay is a bit more mixed.  My second grade teacher Colleen Poucher (some names you don’t forget!) turned over my desk because I was making clay snakes during class.   Looking back I assume she was having a bad day.  We all do sometimes.

In the sixth grade we worked with clay and put it in the kiln.  I knew our family made bears.  Although I did my best, no one seemed to recognize what I had made.  It was more of a Picasso bear with pastel spots and an indiscernible shape.  I knew what it was, if nobody else did.

God told Jeremiah to go down to the potter’s house.  There he observed the potter making a pot.  But a flaw in the clay prevented completion of the project.  So the potter smashed it and started over.  God told Jeremiah that He, Himself, was the Potter.  Israel was the clay.  He could mold and fashion the nation any way he chose.  Not once has clay ever said to a potter, “Why did you make me this way?”  I wonder what God will make of us as we yield to his design?

 Pray with me:
Have thine own way, Lord.  Have thine own way.  Thou art the Potter.  I am the clay.  Mold me and make me after thy will, while I am waiting, yielded and still.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
