Erase the Space: An Update from Derek Burtch |
|
|
We asked Derek Burtch MA '19, give us on update on Erase the Space, a thriving non-profit with BLTN roots conceived and run by Derek and Amelia Gordon MA '19. By facilitating year-round writing exchanges, Erase the Space intends to “help repair public discourse.” What follows is a quick dispatch from a visionary teacher and busy dad.
From our beginnings as a BLTN exchange after our first year at Bread Loaf, Amelia and I could not have imagined the impact Erase the Space has had on Central Ohio. This year we have 15 classroom learning exchanges between schools in Central Ohio ranging from kindergarten to AP classes.
Erase the Space now operates in 14 different school districts around Central Ohio in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. Our board is composed of community members who have a passion for our work (one of which is the legendary Brenda Brueggemann), and we have been asked to serve on boards and steering committees of partner organizations like the Columbus Education Justice Coalition and the Committee for Human and Civil Rights for the Ohio Education Justice Coalition. We have also been honored to speak at a few conferences this year like the Association of Departments of English for MLA in DC and NCTE in Columbus.
Amelia and I are proud of the work we have done and the places that our vision has gone, and we're both tired. Teaching while doing all of this has been exhausting on top of both of us now having families of four. We are grateful for the community we have gathered around Erase the Space to keep the work going and enlarging our concept of community outside of the boundaries created by school districts. Shout out to our Bread Loaf community and friends; I miss you all!
-Derek Burtch

BLTN's optional spring meeting will take place via Zoom on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 7-8 pm. Marianela Rivera will guide us through an interactive presentation drawn from her work at Homeplace Collective, her Massachusetts consultancy group "that helps educational institutions, community spaces, and non-profits drive social change by building transformational civic skills and critical socio-political literacy." We'll have more details as the date draws closer.
