Can Commuters Join a Fraternity or Sorority?
The short answer: YES! 30% of students are involved in Greek Life here at Miami and commuters are welcome to join. If you are a commuter thinking about going Greek (and NOW is the time to be thinking about it), we have some things for you to keep in mind as you go through the process.
- Organizations are not one-size-fits-all with regard to the time commitments. Make sure you understand what these are for the organizations you are interested in.
- Most events and meetings occur later in the evenings or on weekends.
- Once your are initiatiated into a fraternity or sorority, you are not allowed to join a different one.
- Going Greek is a great way to socialize and meet new people.
- Greek life presents unique opportunities to get involved with the community.
- There is a sense of belonging and community on campus.
- Most chapters require study hours or study tables, so studying may become more frequent and routine.
Quick Run-Down of Formal Recruitment:
In order to join, a student must meet the following requirements. These must have been completed at Miami or another accredited institution of higher education:
- Must have had at least one full-time semester by January 3: Fall or Spring
- 12 credit hours with at least a 2.5 minimum grade point average
- Completion of the two part online education course prior to the start of recruitment
Fraternities:
- Must be signed up before Janurary 3rd at 5 pm
- Must attend an IFC Kick-Off or Go Greek 101 Session
Sororities:
- Must be signed up before January 3d at 5 pm.
- Must attend the 6 rounds of Recruitment (This takes place in the first 3 weekends of the Spring Semester)
