Dear ILR Community,
As the summer begins to wind down and we anticipate the cool, crisp days of autumn, I hope this finds you safe, healthy, and happy. The challenges associated with the pandemic have been daunting for all of us. But through it all, our commitment to you has never wavered—in fact, it has only strengthened our determination to provide you with the best ILR experience possible.
As we announced last month, ILR will offer all fall semester classes virtually. Our catalog will not be mailed. Look for it to be released in PDF format here in an upcoming eNewsletter. Registration will open on September 1st. Once registration opens, our website will be updated with fall course content and the link to online registration.
Many instructors and volunteers are working tirelessly behind the scenes to provide this opportunity for you. I certainly hope you'll reward their efforts by joining us for this new adventure in learning. Until we can safely meet in the classroom again, remote learning will provide us the connectedness we've been missing.
With a positive attitude and a willingness to learn a few new tricks, I know we can accept this challenge, rise to the occasion, and make this fall a semester to remember.

A unique opportunity

Courtesy of our friends at U.C.'s OLLI, you're invited to the following FREE program. Thank you, OLLI, for this opportunity.
Independence Corrupted: How America’s Judges Really Make Their Decisions
Thursday, August 20, 1-3 pm, via Webex

Judge Charles Benjamin Schudson knows how judges really make their decisions. He brings us behind the bench to probe judicial minds, analyze actual trials and sentences, and takes us into chambers to hear judges forging appellate decisions about life and death, corporate crime, multimillion-dollar damages, and priceless civil rights. Most significantly, he exposes the financial, political, personal, and professional pressures threatening judicial integrity like never before.
To register, send your name and email to ILR. A Webex link to join the meeting will be sent to you a day prior to the webinar. Never tried Webex before? See below for a connectivity test and first-time joining instructions.

Ready to connect?

Are you wondering if your computer or tablet and internet are Webex ready? Try this quick Webex network test. The fact that you're reading this shows you likely have everything you need.
Are you signing up for the above class and wondering how to connect? We'll send you a join meeting email the day before the class. If this is your first time joining a Webex class/meeting, review these instructions and Join-a-Webex-Meeting video (press the blue arrow in the center of the graphic after opening the link).

Recognize anyone?

ILR has been hard at work behind the scenes preparing remote delivery of the fall semester. We'll be using the Webex video conferencing platform. If you've used Zoom, you'll find Webex very familiar.
Our dedicated team of volunteers is currently working with our instructors. Once the semester nears, we'll hold informational Webex sessions for the membership. If you have a computer or tablet and an internet connection, you're good to go!
Are you tech-savvy and experienced using Zoom or Webex? We have the need for a few extra hands to assist in class. If you'd like to join our team, please email the ILR office.

Have you missed us?

Have you moved from the area, out of state, or even left the country? Or have you previously stepped away from classes because of mobility or hearing issues? Now, with ILR moving to virtual delivery for the fall, you can take classes once again. All it takes is a computer and an internet connection. Comfy pants are optional.

Call for proposals

No, not that kind of proposal! Although that's sweet, we're calling for something even sweeter—ILR spring 2021 course proposals.
There’s a reason our instructors come back year after year. Teaching for ILR is not only rewarding, it’s also a heck of a lot of fun!
Do you have a special hobby or skill, or are you knowledgeable about a particular subject? If so, we need you! Please consider submitting a course proposal. Proposal forms can be found on the ILR website under the Get Involved tab.

Don’t delay; the deadline to submit your spring 2021 proposal is November 6.

Because we can't resist cute pets, you get a twofer! While there are many great reasons to register for more than 50 ILR classes this fall, here are just two of them.

Who wants to go to Paris with Jim Rubenstein (and Winston)? You can, via Jim's ILR class, Paris: 2,000 Years of Planned Beauty, coming Wednesdays this fall to a computer near you!
Paris is (arguably) the most beautiful city in the world, but not by accident. For 2,000 years, the city has been planned by strong-willed visionaries. How have two millennia of plans shaped today's Paris? Given the relatively recent invention of photography, much of our understanding of 2,000 years of planned Paris comes from its many celebrated artists, as well as its architectural heritage. Experience some of the lesser-known sites of Paris as an informed visitor, not a tourist caught in an overwhelming crush—someday, when we are able to travel again!

Did you know that three Greek and Latin dictionaries weigh a total of 80 pounds? You have to be strong to be a Classicist! Judith de Luce (and Britni) invites you to enroll in her course, Women Mystery Writers and Their WOMEN Detectives, offered on Tuesdays this fall.
Joined by guest presenters Sonya Montana, John Krafft, and Terry Hunt, four women writers read in chronological order will provide ample opportunity to discuss how these authors create and develop their women detectives. We will read Gladys Mitchell, Barbara Neely, Sarah Dunant, and Jaqueline Winspear.
