Major and Minor Expo

The first all University-Wide Major Expo took place on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Banquet and Ballrooms of the OC.  Over 175 faculty, staff, employers, and alums participated and 275 current students attended the event.  This event allows students to find out more about the programs OU has to offer and students consistently tell us in surveys that it helps them to decide which major and career path to choose.

Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies

The BIS student organization "Interdisciplinary Society" started this fall as a way for students to connect, get involved in leadership opportunities, and to grow student involvement. We are looking forward to working with members to help them develop as OU students and interdisciplinarians.
The BIS Faculty Council has recently approved a change to the BIS degree requirements where open general education can now be included in a student's plan of study. This will help our students stay as close to 120 credits and our 32 credit residency as much as possible. The change will officially be noted in the next catalog but we can work with students as they are planning.

First Year Advising Center

The FYAC has made several changes to our advising practices after a program review conducted by two NACADA consultants this past spring.  Our new internal motto "Just in Time, Just Enough, Just for Me" ensures that we are providing students support at the time it is most useful, with just the information they need to know, and in a personalized way specific to them.
As a result of this new approach, we now have an adviser "on call" every day to handle questions or concerns from students that need immediate attention.  We also launched a group advising option for students majoring in business, engineering, pre-med, nursing and those undecided in their major.  Group advising allows us to share major-specific information, but also create a sense of community with students of similar academic interests.

School of Business Administration

Tiffany LeDonne-Smith has paired 17 current business students with 17 alumni mentors for the Women’s Leadership and Mentor Program for the 2022-23 academic year.  A kick-off dinner was held where the mentors shared why they believe mentoring can help students to be successful in the business world. Members of the Women’s Leadership and Mentorship program also worked on learning their unique leadership styles at a recent meeting. See photos on Shutterfly here.

School of Education and Human Services

SEHS Advising collaborated with colleagues from University and SBA Career Services, University Development, and the Department of Organizational Leadership to host the 4th annual HR Recruitment Night, followed by an Alumni Afterglow for the first time. We had 50 students attend to network with employers looking to fill part-time, full-time, and HR internship positions.  Following the career portion, we held a mixer filled with food, mocktails, music, and conversation between our HRD alumni and current students. It was great to be back in person and we look forward to continued collaboration and an even bigger event next year!

School of Engineering and Computer Science

The SECS Undergraduate Advising Office has been busy engaging our students this fall.  Alexa Cotter has been working with our Engineering and Computer Science Special Interest Floor.  Engineering students who live on the Engineering Student Interest Floor (SIF) in Hamlin Hall started their first semester with a Kickoff SIF Event and Q&A with current students, faculty, and advisors to learn about what it is like to attend OU and be successful as a EGR/CS major. Tessa Johnson led an interactive Cider and Donuts Social in October presenting resources on how to navigate the first semester as a freshman.  A Pizza and Game Night and walk through the Winter Wonder Lights at Meadow Brook Hall are planned for later this semester.
The Office of the Dean has sponsored two "Pizza With the Dean and Faculty" events to encourage students to gather and meet our Dean and faculty for questions and discussion.  We have also invited our freshmen to get early viewings of the sophomore and senior design projects this fall so that they can see the exciting displays that they will be doing in their undergraduate studies ahead!
New signage has been added outside the advising office with the help of Jenny Lee, SECS Academic Adviser!  The new signage allows students to be up-to-date on happenings in the office, get easy access to information they may need, and eliminate paper waste!

School of Health Sciences

This fall, the School of Health Sciences undergraduate academic advisers presented pre-professional sessions for students majors within the School. With the support of our faculty, we designed these sessions to increase student knowledge and introduce new strategies related to the process of becoming a more competitive applicant. Virtual sessions were individualized with targeted information needed to prepare for specified graduate programs.
